Biography
Sandra Morais Cardoso is an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Medicine and Principal Investigator at CIBB, University of Coimbra, where she heads the group of "Mitochondrial Signaling in Neurodegeneration. Her most recent research focus on the role of the microbiome-mitochondria crosstalk in the activation of neuronal innate immunity and its impact in the development of neurodegenerative diseases, namely Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. She has published over 90 papers (H index= 37; >8500 citations) with a CNCI in Cell Biology of 8.80. Sandra Morais Cardoso has mentored 8 PhD and 13 MSc students. She has coordinated 9 and participated in 13 research grants. She is ad hoc reviewer for Technology Foundation STW (Holland), Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG (Germany), Parkinson UK Grant Review, The Austrian Science Fund FWF, among others. In recognition of her professional track and contributions in the field of Health research, Sandra was awarded a Medal of Merit from the Ministry of Health in 2013. The research she developed on the role of mitochondria in the etiology and progression of Parkinson's disease was distinguished with the Janssen Neurosciences Award in 2014, and also with the Mantero Belard Prize (2016) by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa.
