O Retrato de uma Rainha: A construção da imagem de D. Maria Pia de Sabóia (1847-1911)

Abstract

The present study, entitled The Portrait of a Queen: The construction of the image of Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), intends to analyse and understand the dynamic forces behind the idealization, creation and circulation of the many images of the penultimate queen of Portugal, through the rich potential of portraiture in its various forms. Still little approached by Art History and image studies, the major role played by the queen-consort of Luís I of Portugal (1838-1889) on the national stage was reflected, during the forty-eight years of her stay in the country (1862-1910), in the production of numerous representations of her likeness. From oil portrait to the photography, from the images enclosed inside the walls of the royal residence to the public circulation and reproduction of caricatures, portraiture, in its various supports and formats, reveals the personality of its subject while also reflecting the artistic, cultural, social and political metamorphoses that transformed both the European dynasties and societies of the second half of the 19th century. Therefore, this study seeks to distinguish and understand the regal and individual identity of Maria Pia of Savoy through the comprehension of the mechanisms involved in the construction of her image, focusing on the analytical and systematic observation of paintings and photos (both official and private), from written “portraits” and descriptions, as well as illustrative representations, connotations and scenarios revealed through the humour patented by the satirical periodicals and pamphlets of her time.

O presente estudo, intitulado O Retrato de uma Rainha: A construção da imagem de D. Maria Pia de Sabóia (1862-1910), pretende analisar e compreender, a partir da convocação e da interpretação das várias possibilidades do retrato, as dinâmicas subjacentes à idealização, conceção e circulação das várias imagens da rainha D. Maria Pia de Sabóia.Embora se trate de uma personalidade histórica ainda pouco explorada no âmbito da História da Arte e dos estudos da imagem, D. Maria Pia, esposa de D. Luís I (1838-1889) e penúltima rainha-consorte da monarquia constitucional portuguesa, desempenhou um papel principal no palco nacional que se refletiu, no decurso dos quarenta e oito anos da sua permanência no país (1862-1910), na produção de inúmeras representações da sua fisionomia. Desde o retrato a óleo até à fotografia, da imagem contida no interior da residência real até à reprodução e circulação pública da caricatura, o retrato, independentemente dos seus vários suportes, formatos e verosimilhança, não dá apenas a conhecer a personalidade da personagem que se apresenta em primeiro plano, como também repercute as metamorfoses artísticas, culturais, sociais e políticas que caracterizam as dinastias e as sociedades europeias da segunda metade do século XIX.Neste sentido, este estudo pretende distinguir e compreender a identidade régia e individual de D. Maria Pia de Sabóia através da compreensão dos mecanismos ativados para a construção da sua imagem, concentrando-se na observação analítica e sistemática de objectos pictóricos e fotográficos (oficiais e privados), de descrições e “retratos” escritos, assim como das representações, conotações e cenários ilustrativos que se revelam através da sátira patenteada pelos periódicos e opúsculos humorísticos do seu tempo.
