The use of adhesive bonds as an alternative to conventional fastening methods leads to considerable weight reductions. This factor plays a key role in today's industry, since weight reduction ensures improvements in terms of energy consumption and performance. The main objective of this work is the use of friction stir spot welding to optimize the mechanical strength of bonded single lap joints. In that way, the presented study aims to produce welded, bonded and hybrid joints to study their strength. The hybrid joints were obtained by friction stir spot welding and use of the adhesive Araldite 420 A/B, simultaneously. Two sets of test pieces of the three types to be analyzed were designed with different geometries, to simulate the usual joint configurations in the automotive industry. This morphology of the test pieces allows the application of the adhesive and welding in different places. To obtain the test pieces, plates of aluminium alloy AA5083-H111 were machined to the desired geometries. The produced joints were subjected to macro and microstructure analyzes, microhardness tests, tensile-shear tests and local strain analyzes. It was verified that the hybrid joints presented lower strength in both sets. The joints that showed the greatest strength in set 1 were the bonded ones and in set 2 were the welded ones. The test pieces of set 1 presented very thin parts were premature rupture occurred. The hybrid joints of set 2 did not have connection between the two plates due to insufficient penetration of the FSSW tool and contamination of the welded zone with adhesive, the latter being used as a welding barrier. |
