Layers of ruin and rehabilitation: the cases of Chimbel and Graça (Goa, India)

Abstract

It underscores the latent potential within the existing historic monuments in Goa for rejuvenation. This thesis will analyse the heritage and cultural tourism and the need for the site's users. The potential of the area in terms of proximity for a sustainable heritage conservation at urban level management for socio-economic development.Divided into distinct levels of study, this thesis encompasses a comprehension of the zone at three levels. At the macro or urbanistic & suburban level, the exploration of the region's history, natural and cultural landscapes is conducted. By understanding the historical development and timeline of the town until its current state, insights can be gained into the underlying factors that have shaped its evolution. The intermediate or street level goes through the intricate layers that constitute the fabric of the old city. It encompasses an examination of an example of a street to observe overall morphology of the built environment, including residential areas, public spaces, boundaries, linkages, and main streets. A sketch and illustrative analysis is conducted, contrasting the present-day situation with its former peak unising present day illustrations and old illustrative references and a brief revitalization proposal is discussed. Lastly, at the micro or edifice level, two specific sites within the region's ruins namely, The Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Chimbel and the Church and Convent of St Augustine, Old Goa are selected for investigation. A diagnostic assessment is undertaken to ascertain the factors that have led to its ruin and its state of conservation. Finally, proposals are put forth to revive and revitalise the site to fit the needs of today.Conclusions and findings from this study aims to display the potential and opportunity of revitalising built heritage in Goa.

Este projeto sublinha o potencial latente de rejuvenescimento dos monumentos históricos existentes em Goa. Esta tese analisará o património e o turismo cultural e a necessidade dos utilizadores do sítio. O potencial da área em termos de proximidade para uma conservação sustentável do património ao nível da gestão urbana para o desenvolvimento socioeconómico.Dividida em níveis distintos de estudo, esta tese engloba uma compreensão da zona a três níveis. Ao nível macro ou urbanístico e suburbano, explora-se a história e as paisagens naturais e culturais da região. Ao compreender o desenvolvimento histórico e a cronologia da cidade até ao seu estado atual, é possível obter informações sobre os factores subjacentes que moldaram a sua evolução. O nível intermédio ou de rua percorre as camadas intrincadas que constituem o tecido da cidade antiga. Inclui o exame de um exemplo de rua para observar a morfologia geral do ambiente construído, incluindo áreas residenciais, espaços públicos, limites, ligações e ruas principais. É realizada uma análise esquemática e ilustrativa, contrastando a situação atual com o seu antigo apogeu, unindo ilustrações actuais e referências ilustrativas antigas, e é discutida uma breve proposta de revitalização. Por fim, ao nível do micro ou edifício, são seleccionados para investigação dois locais específicos das ruínas da região, nomeadamente a Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, Chimbel e a Igreja e Convento de Santo Agostinho, Velha Goa. Procede-se a uma avaliação diagnóstica para apurar os factores que conduziram à sua ruína e o seu estado de conservação. Por fim, são apresentadas propostas para reavivar e revitalizar o local de acordo com as necessidades actuais.As conclusões e os resultados deste estudo visam mostrar o potencial e a oportunidade de revitalizar o património construído em Goa.
