Biography
Joana Bicker (JB) began her scientific career as an undergrad student, when she was awarded an Integration into Research Grant (BII; 2009) by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). During her BII, she performed the optimization of a pharmacological pre-screening method for molecules administered by oral and intranasal routes. She finished a MSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences with the highest grade in her year and for that reason, she was awarded the Lusitan Pharmaceutical Society Award by the Order of Pharmacists (2011). Then, she started a PhD in Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy with a PhD grant awarded by FCT, concluded with praise and distinction by unanimity (2018). Her PhD project, entitled "A screening strategy for evaluation of drug transport across the blood-brain barrier", was carried out in collaboration with pharmaceutical company BIAL. In this period, she acquired advanced training at international institutions, namely the University of Salamanca (Spain) and the University of Uppsala (Sweden). After her PhD, JB was hired as contracted postdoc researcher in the scope of project 4Epilepsy (2019-2022) and also collaborated in project N2BD (2018-2021).

During her PhD, she worked as Teaching Adjunct (2014-2016) at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, where she continued to work later as Invited Assistant Professor and Invited Auxiliar Professor (2017-2019). Until this day, she supervised 11 MSc theses and was invited as Main Examiner of 14 MSc theses in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Applied Pharmacology. Currently, she is supervising a PhD student from from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and a MSc student from the University of Algarve (Portugal). In addition to national students, she mentored 3 international MSc/PhD students in the lab, from Spain and Slovakia. She also lectures a pharmacokinetics module of the Drugs R&D PhD Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

She was Invited Guest Editor of a Special Issue of Pharmaceutics (MDPI) together with Dr Annabelle Ballesta (France). She has been a regular reviewer of publications from Scientific Reports (Nature), Pharmacological Research (Elsevier), Pharmaceutics, Antibiotics and Biomedicines (MDPI).

In total, JB published 29 articles in peer-reviewed international journals (8 as first author). These encompass publications in Q1 journals as first author, namely European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics (2014), International Journal of Pharmaceutics (2016), Drug Metabolism and Disposition (2017), European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2018) and high impact factor Analytica Chimica Acta (2013), British Journal of Pharmacology (2020), and Pharmacological Research (2020). One of her most cited articles on BBB models, with a Field-Weighted citation impact of 3.6, was featured in Top Cited publications of the European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics.
In addition, she published 2 book chapters, has a Scopus h-index of 11 and 491 citations. Presently, she is co-inventor of two filed patents.
Her work has been presented in national and international conferences, as posters (20) and oral presentations (28), 3 of which as Invited Guest Speaker.

She has experience in drug screening methods, development and validation of bioanalytical techniques according to ICH guidelines, cell culture and animal experimentation. She also has certification as Investigator–Coordinator in Animal Sciences (EU Functions A+B+D) by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA).

In 2020, JB participated as volunteer in the Crowdfight COVID-19 initiative, a joint effort of the scientific community on the fight against COVID-19.
