Biography
Paulo Menezes has a Ph.D. on Electrical and Computer Engineering - specialisation in Informatics from the University of Coimbra. Paulo Menezes is a faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (www.deec.uc.pt) of the University of Coimbra, where he has lectured courses like: Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Mobile Robotics, Microprocessors, Computer Architecture, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics and 3D Modelling, and Human-Machine Interaction.
He is an associate researcher of the Institute of Systems and Robotics (ISR) (www.isr.uc.pt) of the University of Coimbra, where he develops and supervises research activities in the areas of Robot Architectures, Computer Vision, Human-Robot Interaction, Human Emotional and Activity Analysis, Augmented Reality, Telepresence Systems and Assistive Technologies, with publications in books, international journals and conferences. The development of research activities both supports and is supported by the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students and research projects. He is the current responsible for the management of the Artificial Perception for Intelligent Systems and Robotics Team (AP4ISR).
Currently he advises/co-advises six Ph.D. students, five at the University of Coimbra, and one at the University Jaume I in Castellòn de la Plana, Spain, and 6 undergraduate students in the development of their Master theses, 5 from the University of Coimbra and 1 from the University Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France.
He has been involved in several national and European projects and maintains collaborations with foreign researchers from institutions such as: LAAS-CNRS in Toulouse, Institute des Systèmes Intelligents et Robotique/Université Pierre et Marie Curie (ISIR/UPMC) in Paris, Khalifa University of Science Technology and Research (KUSTAR) in Abu Dhabi, Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Spain, Technical University of Liberec in Czech Republic, Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa - Mexico, Insituto Nacional Politecnico, UQeretary - Mexico, or Kazakh National Research Technical University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
In various occasions he has been invited to lecture or present talks at sites like: Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris - France, Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa - México, Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Portugal, Technical University of Liberec - Czech Republic, Universitat Jaume I - Spain, Universidade do Porto - Portugal, etc..
He has received the following awards: 1st Prize "As Novas Fronteiras da Engenharia" (New Fronteers in Engineering) by Ordem dos Engenheiros (Engineers Portuguese Society) in the category "Lecturers in Engineering Degrees" 2017 from the article Augmented Reality in Engineering. Best Paper Award for the article "Augmented Reality in Engineering" in the session TaT Talk About Teaching at 19th International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning and 45th International Conference on Engineering Pedagogy, Belfast, UK, 2016. Best Innovative Demonstrator "Virtual transportation for immersive systems" at Exp.at'17 The Experiment@ International Conference, Faro, Portugal, 2016. Honourable Mention for the Demonstrator "Demonstration of the Influence of Human Emotions in Physiological Signals" at Exp.at'15 The Experiment@ International Conference, Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 2015. Best Demonstrator "Immersive Virtual Mirror Experience" at SciTecIn'15 - Science and Technologies of Interaction, Coimbra Portugal, 2015.
He is a permanent consultant of the Laboratory of Systems and Automation (LAS) of the Instituto Pedro Nunes - a technology transfer institute linked to the University of Coimbra.
He has participated in the organisation as Local Arrangements co-Chair of IEEE/RSJ IROS2012 - Intelligent Robots and Systems.
He has recently organised two Portuguese conferences the "Encontro Português de Computação Gráfica e Interação 2015" and "Videojogos 2015" in a joint conference SciTecIN'15 - Sciences and Technologies of Interaction, where he was the General Chair and the Programme Chair of "Encontro Português de Computação Gráfica e Interação 2015". He was also part of the organising committees of Robotica 2017 a Portuguese Competition on Robotics, and IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions (ICARSC 2017).
