Biography
I obtained the Applied Biology Degree at University of Minho, Braga, Portugal in 2007 investigating the toxicity of the herbicides metolachlor and alachlor on bacterial model, Bacillus stearothermophilus and membrane model system of lipossomes of DPPC. These findings were published in Environmental Pollution as first author (IF 6.8,Top 5%). In 2009, I completed the Master’s in Cellular and Molecular Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal, studying the In vivo effects of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on heart and liver mitochondrial bioenergetics and ATP-sensitive potassium channels publishing this work on Top 2% in Medicine/General Medicine. I obtained a Ph.D. degree at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2016 researching the “Programming of fetal cardio-renal mitochondria by maternal nutrition” publishing two seminal papers on Top 5% explaining the "Effects of Moderate Global Maternal Nutrient Reduction on Fetal Baboon Renal Mitochondrial Gene Expression at 0.9 Gestation” and the recently accepted “Sex dependent vulnerability of fetal nonhuman primate cardiac mitochondria to moderate maternal nutrient reduction”. (Clinical Science, IF 5.2, Top5%, 1st author) revealing the causal relationship between nutrition during pregnancy and the development of diabetes and cardio-renal dysfunction later in life in a baboon model. In this context, I spent 24 months working at both the university of Texas Health Science Center and later at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, this international experience afforded me contact with world-class scientists and cutting-edge science. In this regard, I have contributed to a strong research collaboration with outstanding international experts such as Drs. Peter Nathanielsz and Mark Nijland (Texas Biomedical Research Institute, USA) and Dr. Stephen P. Ford (University of Wyoming, USA) who provided me with a scientific knowledge and know-how to conduct research work in this area. Recently I have being testing the practice of voluntary exercise during gestational diabetes as a means to improve mitochondrial function in the offspring, with the first manuscript recently published in Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental (IF 6.5, Top 6%). So far, I co-authored 24 full-length original articles published in peer reviewed journals, with 10 in top 10%, 7 first author, 6 second author, 2 last author, 1 first author book chapter, with 79% in Q1, >550 citations and h-index 14 (scholar). I am publishing in the best journals in my area and with the relevance and recognition of my research being mirrored in the high number of citations. I have 7 invited oral communications; 35 oral presentations; 57 poster presentations; 48 abstracts in conference proceedings and received 20 awards and honors. I prioritize knowledge dissemination, organizing 16 scientific meetings, 11 outreach science activities and attending more than 50 advanced courses. I scientific co-supervised 17 students; performed 11 teaching activities and participated in 11 scientific societies. I broaden my knowledge collaborating in >10 research team projects, with solid international collaborations and acting as an ad-hoc reviewer in four different publications including Antioxidants & Redox Signaling and The Journal of Physiology. My main research interest is cardiac diseases and mitochondrial bioenergetics in health and disease, namely I aim to clarify the role of nutritional womb environment in fetal cardiac development. My work supports that gestational programming of fetal mitochondrial fitness can be relevant for cardiac pathologies in the adult life. In summary, I am a researcher performing novel and creative science who is positively influencing the development of a field, I am also an enthusiastic of developing innovative and effective ways to engage society in science, improving science literacy and education.
