Resumo: The aim of this work is to study the mechanical and tribological behavior of Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings for application in polymer injection molds. The wear of the mold cavities surfaces is one of the main problems encountered in the processing of polymeric parts, which can affect the quality of the parts and/or lead to mold failure. DLC coatings are known for having excellent mechanical properties and self-lubricating characteristics, thus presenting as a promising solution to solve this problem. Therefore, this work evaluates the tribological behavior of DLC-type coatings doped with: tungsten (W), silver (Ag), silicon (Si) and silicon and oxygen (SiO). All coatings were deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS), with concentrations of metallic elements between 10-15 at.%, in the case of the DLC-SiO coating the O content is approximately the double of the Si. Additionally, interlayers of chromium (Cr), with approximately 300 nm thick, were deposited in order to improve the adhesion of the coatings to the metallic substrates (M2 steel). The coatings were characterized concerning their chemical composition, morphology, thickness, mechanical properties (hardness and reduced Young's modulus), surface roughness and tribological behavior. The addition of doping elements into the DLC matrix caused a general reduction of the mechanical properties, with the carbide forming elements (DLC-W and DLC-Si) presenting the highest hardness values and reduced Young's modulus. The tribological behavior of the coatings was characterized by pin-on-disk (POD) tests against steel balls (Steel-DLC system) and polycarbonate (PC) balls (PC-DLC system), both with a diameter of 10 mm. These two systems were evaluated under two conditions of temperature, room temperature and 100 ºC. The wear of the steel balls was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the aid of energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), while the wear of the PC balls was analyzed by optical microscopy. For the Steel-DLC system, with the increase of the test temperature to 100°C, all coatings and steel balls showed an increase in wear rates. The lowest average coefficients of friction (COF) were observed for the DLC-Si and DLC-SiO coatings, both at room temperature and 100 ºC. Those were also the ones that showed the lowest wear of the steel balls. SEM-EDS analysis of both steel balls used against the DLC-Si and DLC-SiO coatings suggest the presence of Si oxides, which are considered responsible for the low friction and low wear caused on the steel balls. The DLC-W coating showed many friction fluctuations in all tests performed, particularly when tested at 100 ºC, showing some variations in its friction and wear resistance. The formation of tungsten oxides (WO_3) could be the reason for this irregular behavior. For the PC-DLC system, an uncoated steel sample was used as reference in order to compare its tribological results with those of the coatings. After the PD tests, no wear on the coatings was observed, on the contrary, the coatings showed the presence of transferred material from the sphere. The DLC and DLC-W coatings presented the lowest coefficient of friction values at room temperature and 100°C, with the DLC coating showing the most stable evolutions of friction and the lowest friction values at both temperature conditions and causing the lowest wear on PC balls at 100°C. On the other hand, the DLC-W coating tested at 100 ºC was the one that caused the greatest wear on the PC ball, showing a substantial increase compared to the test performed at room temperature. Thus, the DLC coating showed the best tribological performance, at both temperatures. It is believed that the reason for this unique behavior of the DLC coating in relation to the others is due to its chemical inertness, a property that is related to the sp_3 bonds of the coating. The introduction of doping elements causes a reduction of those bonds, thus increasing the reactivity between the doped DLC coatings and the PC ball, which in turn increases friction and wear of the balls. It was concluded that the coating that presents the greatest potential for this study is the DLC coating. However, a more in-depth research, under conditions closer to those used in polymer injection, is recommended.
