Abstract

Multispecies Ethnography is of special importance today due to the environmental sustainability issues faced by society and the increasing human occupation of areas inhabited by other living beings. New problems arise as the human species is an integral part of a relational network in which it interacts with itself, the environment, and other species -- all of these coexisting and being intrinsically linked."Animal Suffering in the Context of Animal Healthcare" takes on special importance in a context inclusive of other species as living beings endowed with rights and sensitive to suffering and, as previously mentioned, our species is an integral part of a network of relationships. These include the relationships that human agents, as guardians, establish with their pets. The subject of this dissertation begins with the concept of animal "suffering" as it has a deep psychological impact on humans, given that we are capable of feeling empathy, not only for other humans, but also for other living beings. Animal suffering influences the mental health and well-being of many people and can be mitigated or at least alleviated though healthcare provided by veterinarians and guardians, who certainly work jointly towards this purpose. As such, the central question to be investigated was: "How do guardians and veterinarians perceive animal suffering?"The investigative path implicitly steered this investigation towards ethnographic fieldwork, which took place at the Animabilis clinic in Torres Novas.Finally, it was interesting to understand how generational matters can affect the profile and veterinary medical practice, by influencing the human perspective towards animal suffering. On the other hand, the same generational issue could be addressed regarding the guardian’s role.

A Etnografia Multi-espécies reveste-se de especial importância na atualidade devido às questões de sustentabilidade ambiental que a sociedade enfrenta e ao aumento da ocupação antrópica em áreas habitadas por outros seres vivos. Geram-se novos problemas dado que a espécie humana é parte integrante de uma rede relacional onde interagem com a mesma, meio ambiente e outras espécies coexistindo todos intrinsecamente interligados. “O Sofrimento Animal no Contexto dos Serviços de Saúde Animal” assume especial importância num contexto inclusivo de outras espécies, como seres vivos dotados de direitos e sensíveis ao sofrimento e, tal como foi anteriormente mencionado, a nossa espécie é parte integrante de uma rede relacional. Tal pressuposto inclui as relações que os agentes humanos, enquanto tutores estabelecem com os seus animais de estimação. A temática desta dissertação inicia-se com o conceito de ‘sofrimento’ animal, uma vez que, o mesmo tem um profundo impacto psicológico nos humanos, dado que somos capazes de sentir empatia não só por outros humanos, mas também por outros seres vivos. Influenciando a saúde mental e o bem-estar de muitas pessoas, o sofrimento animal pode ser mitigado ou pelo menos apaziguado através dos cuidados de saúde animal proporcionados pelos veterinários e pelos tutores, os quais unem certamente esforços para tal. Por isso a questão central a ser investigada foi: “Como é que tutores e veterinários percecionam o sofrimento animal?”. O percurso investigativo implicitamente remeteu esta investigação para um trabalho de cariz etnográfico, que decorreu na clínica Animabilis, em Torres Novas. Por fim, foi interessante perceber de que modo a questão geracional pode interferir com o perfil e com a prática médica veterinária, influenciando a perspetiva humana em relação ao sofrimento animal. Por outro lado, a mesma questão geracional pôde ser abordada relativamente ao papel do tutor.
