Title: | Fendilhação em Vigas Construídas com Materiais Ativados Alcalinamente | Authors: | Marques, Paulo Rafael Jesus | Orientador: | Lopes, Sérgio Manuel Rodrigues Vasconcelos Lopes, Adelino |
In the past century, Ordinary Portland Cement, OPC, has played an important role in civil engineering, becoming the most common building material. Its low cost, high availability and great manufacturing simplicity are the main causes of its widespread use. However, the combustion processes and the raw materials require large amounts of energy and consequent CO2 emissions, of about 4 to 7 % of the total emissions of the planet. Alternatively, as a replacement of cement-concrete, there are alkali-activated materials that, despite being considered as new, are thought to have been used in old constructions such as the Colosseum or the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. With the development of these materials, also called geopolymers, it is intended that these materials would be able to exhibit good characteristics in terms of mechanical behavior, durability and strength to various actions when compared to those of existing cement-concrete structures. This dissertation studies the cracking in 14 beams built with alkali-activated materials. The overall work has a strong experimental nature and focuses specifically on simply supported beams subjected to bending, due to two symmetrical point loads. The 14 beams were divided into 3 groups: the first deals with the reinforcement ratio as a parameter; the second focuses on the stirrups spacing; and finally, the third comprises the beams with compression reinforcement equal to tension reinforcement. This dissertation/work highlights the importance of the study of new alternative materials in comparison with traditional cement-based materials in reinforced concrete members. The strains were studied as well asits influence on cracking. The influence of the amount of reinforcement and its distribution on the crack opening as well as the initiation and development of cracks were also studied. Results from the experiments were compared with the design rules of existing regulations for cement-based materials and conclusions were drawn. |
