Resumo: Substance use is a serious public health issue, having an enormous financial and human cost in many countries. That has caused researchers from various areas of expertise to unite in an effort to identify variables that contribute to its explanation and treatment. In that context, religiosity has been the target of particular attention in the past few decades. The results of those investigations point, generally, to an inverse relationship between various dimensions of the religious experience and substance use. However, most of those investigations took place in the United States of America, a country with very specific characteristics in regard to religion and substance use. The main objective of this investigation was to verify if religiosity has the same protective effect in Portugal. Considering that objective, the present study used a sample of emerging adults, who were, therefore, experiencing a period of human development characterized by important changes in the individuals’ religiosity and substance use. The data collection occurred online, using a questionnaire built specifically for this study, which included a group of questions about religiosity, another about interpersonal relationships, another about the use of both legal and illegal substances, and a third one about sociodemographic variables. The results of varied statistical analysis did not show any significant relationship between the participants’ religiosity and substance use. This pattern was observed both when using global religiosity and substance use indexes, as well as when the analysis focused, separately, on the multiple dimensions of religiosity and the different types of substances. Association with substance-using peers and the participants’ sex were the variables with the most significant relationship with substance use. Taking these unexpected, but not unique, results into account, some suggestions are made to future investigations, with a more thorough methodology, regarding the same topic, in Portugal.
