Giardiasis is a neglected disease that affects 130 to 262 million people. Although the mortality rate is low, this pathology causes a high morbidity rate, causing a great socioeconomic and public health impact. Existing therapies to treat giardiasis have many side effects and the rates of re-infection are quite high. With the emergence of resistance to antiparasitic drugs, it has become essential to find new therapeutic targets and develop new drugs to deal with this parasitosis. In this sense, extracellular vesicles emerged, which prove to be attractive targets for the treatment of giardiasis. These vesicles seem to perform essential functions in the parasites, namely, in the colonization of the target cells, in the immunomodulation of the host's defensive response and in the communication between the parasites and the host. Because they can be involved in fundamental processes for the survival of Giardia, extracellular vesicles have the potential to be used as a therapeutic target in giardiasis.
