Dementia is one of those diseases, which is defined as a abnormal cognitive decline and detrioration in the ability to maintain everyday activities. From the risk factors already known, loneliness has been the most recently sucecessfully linked to dementia. The main objective of this study was to verify if loneliness had any statistically significant association with cognitive decline in a population sample collected urban, periurban and rural areas from Center of Portugal. Seventy-two (72) elderly people were assessed for cognitive decline and other psychosocial variables using, respectivally, the Mini Mental State Examination and the UCLA Loneliness, Subjective Well-Being Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Positive and Negative Afection Scale, Lubben Social Network Scale and the Geriatric Depression Scale. For the study of association between variables was applied the Mutiple Regression Scale test with the help of IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Software, version 23.The results of the Mutiple Linear Regression showed that 37,4% of the variability of Mini Mental State Examination results can be explained by education level, negative affectivity and depressive symptomatology (F = 13,514; ρ < 0,001; R2 = 0,374). Loneliness was excluded from the predictive model for not showing any significant association with the cognitive decline observed in the sample. The highest levels of loneliness were found in rural areas, with a average score of 31.24 (DP = 12,647), along with a higher incidence of cognitive decline (66,7%). |
