Abstract: Overexploitation of fossil fuels and hydric resources, increasing droughts, effluents production in large scale and environmental concerns, besides increasing the importance of the effluents treatment processes, have boosted the substitution of synthetic flocculants by natural-based flocculants (eco-friendly), thus promoting a sustainable development. The present study focused on the synthesis of water-soluble cellulose-based cationic flocculants, with significant lignin content and obtained from kraft pulps, and in evaluating their efficiency in the treatment of an industrial effluent from tannery industry. The pulps, properly characterized, were obtained from invasive tree species (Acacia dealbata (Ac) and Ailanthus altissima (Al)) and from wood residues (Pinus pinaster (P)). The first step of the synthesis was the oxidation of the pulp with NaIO4 to dialdehyde cellulose (DAC), in the presence of LiCl, so that cellulose reactivity could be increased. This reaction was carried out at 70 °C or 75 °C for 3 h, from which, high degrees of substitution of hydroxyl groups by aldehyde groups (1.4-1.6) were obtained, in particular for the DAC samples from pine. A DAC of each species was then cationized using Girard’s reagent T, whose amount was adjusted (GT/aldehyde molar ratio = 1.95, 3.9 and 5.85) in order to synthesize flocculants with different characteristics, at 70 °C and for 1 h. It was obtained a set of polyelectrolytes with degrees of substitution of hydroxyl groups by alkylammonium groups (0.9-1) appropriate, for the end use. The polyelectrolytes were characterized by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (for hydrodynamic diameter) and electrophoretic light scattering (for zeta potential), and solubility tests in water at 0.2% (w/w) were performed. The measured potentials were roughly similar (+48 a +55 mV), and the minimum and maximum hydrodynamic diameters were 73 and 287 nm. Only the pine polyelectrolytes were not fully soluble in water. For coagulation and/or flocculation tests, a cationic cellulose from each tree species was selected, and a synthetic flocculant for comparison purposes. Initially, flocculation tests where polymer dosage and pH were varied, were carried out; then, flocculation occurred in the sieved effluent and with pH change; finally, the same effluent was treated by coagulation-flocculation with the addition of bentonite, changing the amount of bentonite and pH. The efficiency of the natural-based flocculants was assessed based on effluent turbidity measurements, and, in a few cases, by measuring chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total chromium. The highest turbidity removals with the cellulosic polyelectrolytes were obtained in the sieved effluent, at the initial pH of the effluent (neutral) and with the addition of bentonite. Overall, cationic cellulose from pine showed the best performance, however, the synthetic flocculant performed better probably due to its much higher hydrodynamic diameter. The removal of COD and total chromium by the cellulosic flocculants proved to be insufficient. Therefore, the produced flocculants do not present as an efficient alternative for the treatment of the effluent under study.
