Vivências da Guerra Colonial: Narrativas de Esposas de Ex-Combatentes – Um Estudo Assente nos Dados.

Abstract

Between 1961 and 1974, Portugal participated in a war that involved not only the thousands of soldiers who participated in it, but also their families, who saw them leave. Although often minimized, the role of the women who remained, who saw their brothers, husbands, boyfriends, and children going to war without knowing if they would ever see them again was extremely important.The purpose of this study was to understand the impact that the Portuguese Colonial War had before, during and after the war, at a professional, personal and family level, what their experiences were and how they still remain present in their lives. It was sought to understand how these women were affected by the participation of their companions (and in some cases, of their brothers) in the Colonial War, and how many years later they view this period of their lives.Thirteen women whose husbands participated in the Colonial War were interviewed, and the interviews were later analyzed using the content analysis recommended by the research methodology based on the data or Grounded Theory.It seemed appropriate to use this methodology because we wanted to know the impressions, points of view and experiences of these women who lived during such a volatile time, about which little is known today. Through their narratives, it was possible to better understand their experiences and the way they influenced their decision-making and the paths they chose to follow throughout their lives.From the analysis of the interviews seven subcaegories emerged, which were later organized in two groups of main categories or themes, the first one denominated lost youth and the second consequences of war. Both categories and their subcategories are directly linked to the central category transgenerational suffering.It was possible to conclude from this investigation that the Colonial War affected the lives of women at various levels, having conditioned their choices and experiences in youth, and later affecting their family relationships and causing suffering that has crossed generations.

Entre 1961 e 1974, Portugal participou numa Guerra que envolveu não só os milhares de militares que nela participaram, mas também as suas famílias, que os viram partir. Apesar de ser muitas vezes minimizado, o papel das mulheres que ficaram, que viram os seus irmãos, maridos, namorados e filhos partir para uma guerra sem saber se os voltariam a ver foi extremamente importante.O presente estudo teve como objetivo perceber o impacto que a Guerra Colonial Portuguesa teve no percurso de vida das mulheres, a nível profissional, pessoal e familiar, quais foram as suas experiências antes, durante e depois da Guerra e como ainda hoje se mantém presente nas suas vidas. Procurou-se perceber como estas mulheres foram afetadas pela participação dos seus companheiros (e em alguns casos, dos irmãos) na Guerra Colonial, e como tantos anos depois vêm esse período das suas vidas.Para isso foram entrevistadas treze mulheres cujos maridos tivessem participado na Guerra Colonial, as entrevistas analisadas posteriormente utilizando a análise de conteúdo preconizada pela metodologia de investigação assente nos dados ou Grounded Theory.Pareceu-nos indicada a utilização desta metodologia, pois queríamos saber as impressões, pontos de vista e vivências destas mulheres que viveram durante um tempo tão volátil, sobre o qual ainda hoje se sabe pouco. Através das suas narrativas, foi possível compreender melhor as suas experiências e a forma como estas influenciaram as suas tomadas de decisão e os caminhos que escolheram seguir ao longo das suas vidas.Da análise das entrevistas emergiram sete subcategorias que foram posteriormente organizadas em dois grupos de categorias ou temas principais, sendo a primeira denominada Juventude Perdida e a segunda Consequências de Guerra. Ambas as categorias e suas subcategorias estão diretamente ligadas à categoria central Sofrimento Transgeracional.Foi possível concluir com esta investigação que a Guerra Colonial afetou a vida das mulheres a vários níveis, tendo condicionado as suas escolhas e vivências na juventude, e mais tarde afetando as suas relações familiares e causando um sofrimento que atravessou gerações.
