À Procura da Chave de um Sonho... Perceções das Mulheres da Comunidade Cigana do Bairro Social do Cabeço sobre a sua Integração Social

Abstract

Este estudo exploratório teve como objetivo principal identificar e analisar as perceções que as mulheres da Comunidade Cigana do Bairro Social do Cabeço têm sobre a sua integração na sociedade, nomeadamente a existência de preconceito, discriminação, desafios e apoios e como critérios de inclusão de pesquisa mulheres da Comunidade Cigana com idade igual ou superior a 18 anos residentes no Bairro Social do Cabeço que integram o Projeto Quero Ser Mais E6G, em curso no concelho da Covilhã.Para a realização deste estudo, foram utilizadas duas técnicas de recolha de dados: a Entrevista Narrativa, aplicada numa amostra não probalilística, por conveniência, num total de 16 mulheres de etnia cigana residentes no Bairro Social do Cabeço, com idade igual ou superior a 18 anos que integrassem o Projeto Quero Ser Mais E6G, e a observação com a elaboração dos diários de campo; e ainda o Inquérito por Questionário, tendo participado 36 mulheres de etnia cigana nos mesmos parâmetros referidos. Após a recolha de informação, os dados foram tratados e analisados através, respetivamente, da análise de conteúdo, e a análise estatística descritiva com recurso ao programa SPSS. Da análise efetuada, concluiu-se que nas mulheres de etnia cigana ainda predomina o baixo nível de escolariedade apesar das constantes mudanças na nossa sociedade, o que condiciona o seu acesso ao mercado de trabalho. Contudo, esta não é a principal condicionante pois, a discriminação existente relativamente a estas populações é notória e, por isso, continuam a enfrentar enormes dificuldades na sua integração.Importa ainda referir, que se verificou que estas mulheres, atualmente, continuam a confrontar-se com processos de discriminação, não só apenas pela sociedade em geral como também pela sua própria comunidade. Para além disso, inferiu-se que as redes de apoio que existem para a comunidade cigana, não são suficientes para dar resposta às necessidades existentes.Desta forma, importa transmitir que, das situações acima identificadas, estas poderão ser melhoradas se forem repensadas as estratégias, as abordagens, os instrumentos e até as políticas públicas que existem para estas populações, sendo que, os profissionais de Serviço Social também deverão estar mais ligados às práticas de intervenção social (necessidades expressas e sentidas pela população cigana).

This explortory study had as its main objective the identification and further analysis of the perceptions that the gypsy women residing in the Gypsy Community of the Bairro Social do Cabeço have about their own integration in modern society and, namely, their views on the existence of discrimination, challenges and welfare support. For this study the inclusion criterion used included gypsy women aged 18 and older residing in the Bairro Social do Cabeço were considered. They were also part of the Projeto Quero Ser Mais E6G in Covilhã.As for the making of this study, two techniques of data gathering were employed: the narrative interview, applied to a non probabilistic sample, by convenience, featuring 16 gypsy women currently residing in the Bairro Social do Cabeço, aged 18 and up and who were part of the Projeto Quero Ser Mais E6G and observations with due daily documentation; The second technique was the Inquiry by Questioning, wherin 36 gypsy women participated with the same parameters mentioned above. After the data gathering, the information was processed and analysed through content analysis and the use of the statistical program: SPSS.The results yielded by the analysis of the data gathered revealed that gypsy women still suffer from low levels of education, despite the fact that our society as a whole is moving in the opposite direction. This severely affects their chance of employment. However, this is not the main reason for the low employment rates of this etnic group since discrimination still plays a heavy role in determining the chances of a gypsy woman being given a certain job. Lack of social integration is also instrumental to the persistence of this problem.It’s important to mention that gypsy women are not only discriminated against by society in general, but also by members of their own community. The support network that exists to provide help to these women is also shown not to be very efficient.Therefore, it’s important to refer that these dysfunctions could very well be improved if better solutions, public policy and approach strategies were employed henceforth, being that Social Workers should always be instrumental in whichever type of internention may be conjured in the future (which the gypsy population desperately needs).
