Migrações Portuguesas. O caso dos concelhos de Estarreja e Murtosa

Abstract

Relatório final de Mestrado em Ensino de História e Geografia no 3.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário. Contempla uma parte didáctica, centrada na experiência concreta de professor estagiário, e uma vertente científica, do estudo de um tema comum às áreas de História e Geografia, que serviu de base a actividades pedagógicas.O tema científico desenvolvido integra-se na História Local, dos concelhos de Estarreja e Murtosa, contíguos, que constituem um caso de estudo singular no âmbito das migrações portuguesas. Partindo do contexto português, estuda-se a população destes dois concelhos ao longo da história, em particular o seu movimento. Em ambos os casos está-se perante territórios cuja população foi sensivelmente afectada por migrações internas e pela emigração. Nas migrações internas assinalam-se sobretudo os movimentos sazonais, em parte dos séculos XIX e XX, de pescadores e varinas, tendo como destino preferencial a região de Lisboa. Quanto à emigração salienta-se o extraordinário número de emigrantes que se destinaram ao Brasil, desde a segunda metade do século XIX até à década de 1960 e, a partir desta altura, os que se dirigiram aos Estados Unidos da América, Venezuela e França. O caso do concelho da Murtosa é singular em Portugal, pela proporção de emigrantes, face à sua população, que concentrou nos Estados Unidos da América. O fenómeno migratório é estudado sob várias vertentes, analisando causas, consequências e abundantemente documentado com fontes de diversa ordem.

Final Report of Masters in Teaching History and Geography in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education. It includes a didactic part, centered on the concrete experience of a trainee teacher, and a scientific aspect, from the study of a theme common to the areas of History and Geography, which served as the basis for pedagogical activities.The scientific theme developed is integrated in Local History, of the neighbour municipalities of Estarreja and Murtosa, which constitute a case study in the matter of Portuguese migrations. Starting from the Portuguese context, the population of these two municipalities is studied throughout history, in particular its movement. In both cases, there are areas whose population has been significantly affected by internal migration and emigration. In the internal migrations, the seasonal movements of fishermen and varinas (fish seller women) in part of the XIX and XX centuries are highlighted, with the Lisbon region as the preferred destination. As for emigration, the extraordinary number of emigrants who went to Brazil from the second half of the nineteenth century until the 1960s, and from that time on, went to the United States of America, Venezuela and France. The case of the municipality of Murtosa is unique in Portugal, due to the proportion of emigrants, compared to its population, which concentrated in the United States of America. The migratory phenomenon is studied under several strands, analyzing causes, consequences and abundantly documented with sources of diverse order.
