The present work encompassed the development of a new family of geopolymeric materials. These materials are obtained by alkaline activation of a binder, and present not only good strength characteristics, but also high durability and low CO2 emissions, therefore contributing to a more sustainable construction. The main purpose of the present dissertation consists on an experimental characterization of the mechanical resistance of the geopolymers, accomplishing tests in both tensile strength by bending and compression. It is important to characterize this resistance in function of the amount of composed binder in the mixture, the influence of the grading curve of the aggregates added to a base mix, in which these are limestone and granite type gravel and finally, the composition of the compound activator. The binder used is based on metakaolin, a kaolinite clay of high fineness and high reactivity, which is capable of being alkaline activated by a compound of hydroxide and silicate mixture. Subsequently, these characteristics are compared with those resulting from a basis mixture, as also compared with results of previous work. The test specimens for mixtures with greatest amounts of binder, achieved best results in terms of compressive strength. By doubling the amount of binder in the mixture, the compressive strength rise almost 15%. The mixtures of granite type gravel present the highest values in all the mechanical properties studied throughout the present work, proving to be a great potential in the geopolymers mixtures. The most effective compound activator trait was the one with twice the amount of sodium silicate in comparison to the sodium hydroxide, achieving the best resistant capabilities both in bending and compression strength.
