Introduction: The Mental Foramen is regarded as a funnel-shaped opening on each side of the mandible. Through it, it passes, among other structures, the mental nerve responsible for providing the innervation of the skin, the lower lip mucosa, the cheeks, the region of the chin and the teeth. Its location is a clinical challenge as it changes with age and in different populations. It is increasingly important to determine the location of the mental foramen in order to decrease iatrogenic injury during surgery. Radiography with CBCT allows a three-dimensional reconstruction, becoming fundamental in identifying the location of the mental foramen. Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the location of Mental Foramen in a sample of the Portuguese population through the CBCT visualization. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out in the Dental Medicine area of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra, in which 150 CBCT of male and female patients over 18 years old were analyzed. The images obtained by CBCT allow the identification of the Mental Foramen using a 3D image in which it is possible to see axial sections of the teeth in the "Screen-Implant" format in the i-CAT analysis program (Imaging Sciences International). Results: The location of the mental foramen is more prevalent between the 1st and 2nd premolars in a sample of the Portuguese population. Conclusions: The location of the mental foramen is more prevalent between the 1st and 2nd premolars but the genders did not present statistically significant differences. CBCT proved to be an adequate method for the localization of the mental foramen. |
