Physical spaces are essentially linked to human formation processes. They are in charge of hosting personal contact, which constitutes a key element in the formation of a human being, both as a professional and as a committed citizen. Through history, the design or remodelling of sound higher education spaces has implied the coordination of two attitudes which has been transcendental for universities: utopia and planning. The first one has been the energy of transformation used in the genesis and evolution of their implantations; thanks to the second one, university precincts have drawn long term evolution, paying special attention to the relation with cities and human scale. The purpose of the present text is to underline the need of conceiving higher education implantations in terms of excellence. Nowadays, the most important challenge they face is to optimize the urban&architectural dimension; for such a mission, making an intelligent use of a planned utopia becomes a factor of excellence, as can be learnt from past paradigms which remain alive
