dc.description.abstract | Earthquake-induced liquefaction often causes extremely serious effects in structures built in granular saturated soils, when earthquakes occur. Even if significant scientific advances have been achieved in terms of the modelling of the behaviour of foundations under the effects of seismic liquefaction, the use of the empirical methodologies is still dominant in current practice with respect to the prediction of the behaviour and to the need to reinforce the soil massif in order to mitigate liquefaction effects. This thesis compiles several methodologies, of empirical basis, proposed in the technical and scientific literature, for predicting the behaviour of structures under the effects of earthquakeinduced liquefaction. The work, mostly base on literature review, aims at characterizing the problem from the fundamental point of view, identifying the various aspects able to influence the behaviour of structures built over soil massifs susceptible to earthquake-induced liquefaction presenting and discussing the methodologies proposed for prediction of the behaviour of those structures, with or without the use of liquefaction mitigation techniques. The work aims at comparing different methodologies that, from the view of current design practice, produce a reasonable estimate of liquefaction effects on structures. Despite of the limitations of these approaches, their use remains very popular, because the modelling based on advanced tools that supposedly produce more accurate predictions is still very erratic and limited to very particular case studies or research situations | eng |
