The main goal of this study is to assess the mechanical properties of Maritime pine round wood through the use of non-destructive techniques, aiming its use on as wood poles for overhead lines. The work was started by a selection and a visual characterization of a sample of the utility poles in accordance with the requirements from the standard EN 14229 (CEN, 2010). After the visual characterization, the utility poles were submitted to non-destructive tests based in four techniques: longitudinal vibration, transverse vibration, ultrasounds and simplified bending. In the end, the non-destructive techniques were validated through the standard test defined in EN 14229 to determine the static modulus of elasticity. The set of the results obtained was analyzed aiming the identification of the geometric/physical wood properties, and/or non-destructive techniques that had a better correlation with the static modulus of elasticity. That was undertaken through the use of simple linear regressions. The static modulus of elasticity obtained with the simplified bending and with the conventional bending tests, performed in accordance with EN 14229, the results were 6.8GPa and 10.6GPa, respectively. For the dynamic tests, the results were higher than those obtained with the last, with values of 14.7GPa for the longitudinal vibration, 14.8GPa for the transverse vibration and 13.2GPa for the ultrasounds. Regarding to the evaluated coefficients of correlation between the static modulus of elasticity and other properties, the best values were obtained with the slope of grain, ovality at ground-line, the density and the pole taper; the simplified bending test and the longitudinal vibration test |
