Desenho e ciência : a produção iconográfica da viagem filosófica ao Brasil no século XVIII

Abstract

No decorrer do século XVIII o desenho, principalmente de História Natural, tornou-se personagem principal na aproximação entre a ciência e a arte. Portugal participou activamente deste processo que se deu através das viagens exploratórias, principalmente a Viagem Filosófica ao Brasil. Com o intuito de colaborar para a análise iconográfica dos desenhos da Viagem, examinamos as imagens produzidas pelos desenhadores José Joaquim Freire e Joaquim José Codina entre 1783 e 1793. Reconhecemos como referências o contexto históricocultural do período, a formação dos desenhadores, as instituições portuguesas, as instruções de viagem e as técnicas e métodos de representação. Após um estudo contextual e múltiplo das temáticas representativas, fomenta-se numa análise sistemática dos desenhos nos aspectos formais, científicos, plásticos e estéticos. Complementar a esta análise está o confronto entre desenhos zoológicos da Viagem Filosófica e os respectivos modelos de representação, conferindo aos desenhadores também um trabalho de gabinete. Inversamente correspondente, é o uso de desenhos botânicos da Viagem Filosófica em reproduções para a obra Flora brasiliensis. Contribui-se, deste modo, para a compreensão do conjunto iconográfico e para a sistematização de carências na formação técnica dos desenhadores em determinadas áreas tal como o seu domínio em outras.

During the 18th century, design, principally of Natural History, became the focus of the meeting between art and science. Portugal participated actively in this process through their exploratory expeditions, particularly the Philospophical Journey to Brasil. With the intuition of collaboration for the iconic analysis of the designs of the expedition, we examine the images produced by the designers Jose Joaquim Freire and Joaquim Jose Codine between 1783 and 1793. We recognise the references within the historical context of the period, the education of the designers, of Portuguese academies, the expedition instructions and the techniques and methods of repsentation. After a contextual study and many more besides of the representative themes, embodied in a systematic analysis of the designs in their formal, scientific, plastic and aesthetic appearances. Complementing this analysis is the divide between the wildlife designs of the Philosophical Jounrey and their respective models of representation, also giving the designers some office work. Inversley communicated is the use of botanical designs from the Philosophical Journey in reproductions for the project Flora brasiliensis. I contributed this method to the comprehension of the iconographic and sistematised joining of the needs in the technical graduation of the designers in determined areas and in the domain in others.
