| Place of publication or event: | Coimbra | Abstract: | O complexo e heterógeno grupo que compõe a população escolar partilha seguramente um fator comum: o espaço escolar.
The complex and heterogeneous group that makes up the school population definitely shares a common factor: the school space. Considering that the relationship between human beings and the built surrounding environment is dynamic and reflexive, considering that buildings and architectural spaces materialize dominant socio-cultural issues, it seems unquestionable that there is an influence of physical spaces devoted to teaching and that they can even be interpreted as causing a type of education. In this scenario, in which generations of students develop and interact and where multiple cognitive, emotional and social processes take place, teachers, directors, parents and even local communities do not remain aside, which reflects their wide range. This study is inserted in this issue, being its purpose to know the opinions of the teachers about the importance of school space, design and organization and also about the transformations carried out as part of Secondary School Modernisation Programme. The methodology that has been adopted is based on the achievement of semi-structured interviews and on the collection of reports written by seven teachers from three schools in the city of Coimbra. The qualitative investigation process that has been adopted, has allowed us to identify the most important areas for teachers: the classrooms, where the educational activity takes place and the social spaces, where emotional interactions that can support it happen, as well as physical factors which may limit the teaching and learning processes: thermal, acoustic and of visibility. It has been observed that there was clearly the willingness of teachers to adopt more dynamic methodologies in the classroom management, but at the same time there was inefficiency as result of lack of flexibility of the organisational structure. Regarding the Secondary School Modernisation Programme teachers recognize its virtues in improving the quality of spaces, but they complain of their limited participation in the process. With this study we have perceived the need to continue promoting reflection and dialogue on this issue among the various actors who experience and live it. |
