While conducting anterolateral craniotomies, the lesion of the zygomaticotemporal nerve, the auriculotemporal nerve and the temporal branch of the facial nerve produces significant morbidity. Material and Methods: Literature review. Results: The epicranial soft tissues of the temporal region have a complex structure, which includes the skin, subcutaneous tissue, temporoparietal fascia, areolar connective tissue plane, temporal fascia, temporal muscle and pericranium. These layers have received diverse and ambiguous names, complicating the analysis of literature. The epicranial nerves have a predictable path through the epicranial soft tissue layers of the temporal fossa. Conclusion: The posterior root of the zygoma, the frontozygomatic suture, the upper limit of the fat of the temporal fascia and the superficial temporal artery are topographical landmarks easily identifiable during cranial approaches that localize the zygomaticotemporal nerve, the auriculotemporal nerve and the temporal branch of the facial nerve. |
