Objectives: The purpose of this study was the determination of the morphological and functional profile of a group of aerobic gymnasts compared to the student population within the same age bracket, using a series of specific physical trials. Methodology: 13 gymnasts were studied from de CantanhedeGym Academy, 6 of which belong to the 1st Division and 7 belong to the Basic skills Division. There was also a group belonging to the Agrupamento de EscolasMarquês de Marialva (Cantanhede) n=33, aged between 9 and 11. The gymnasts were graded in several morphological variables (body mass, height, upper body length, subcutaneous skinfold fat), somatic information was gathered for the determination of the somatotype variables and maturation through the predicted mature height. For the functional variables a series of tests was used for the physical evaluation with strength, endurance and flexibility tests and for the specific evaluation with tests with a difficulty level determined by the Federação de Ginástica de Portugal and added to the Regulamento da SeleçãoNacional& Alto rendimento – 2011/2012. Results: The comparison between the gymnasts from the 1st Division with the gymnasts from the Basic skills Division using a descriptive statistic shows that the first group presents superior data in all the external morphology variables; also that the somatotype of the first group is endomorph-ectomorph and the second group is balanced endomorph. Data reveals that according to the predicted mature height, the 1st division gymnasts are in a more advanced stage of maturation(166.6 cm to 162.2 cm). In the functional component the 1st division gymnasts accomplish better results than the Basic skills division gymnasts, especially in the arm flexed tests and the “V” shaped angle. With regards to the endurance test, the difference between the 1st Division gymnasts and the Basic skills division gymnasts was very small, even though the 1st Division gymnasts did in average 28 repetitions with an amplitude variation of 1 and the Basic skills division gymnasts did in average 27 repetitions with an amplitude variation of 8. As to the flexibility tests we can observe that the 1st Division gymnasts have in average superior results than the Basic skills division gymnasts. When comparing the gymnastics group with the non-gymnastics group, using an inferential parametric statistic using the t student test for external morphology and the variable sum of XII the skinfold subcutaneous fat for somatotype, the mesomorphism component presents significant statistical differences (p<0.05). In the somatic maturation the gymnasts group has a higher percentage of mature predicted stature (84.9%). The functional variable data, physical abilities, show that the gymnastics group is superior in the strength tests, except in the hip flexion-extension where there isn’t a significant difference. In the endurance test all the data are the same but in the flexibility tests there are significant differences statistically (p<0.01). Conclusions: The Aerobic gymnasts, in the 9 to 11 age group, have a higher stature, lower weight, lower upper body length, higher lower body length, the sum of their skinfold somatotype is lower when compared with non-gymnasts. Their somatotype profile is balanced endomorph and the somatic maturation from the predicted mature stature points to a late maturation. On a functional level, the gymnasts group is characterized by having higher degrees of strength and flexibility when compared to the non-gymnasts group.
