Cícero: Em Defesa de Célio

Abstract

O fulcro da presente dissertação é constituído pela tradução completa, inédita em língua portuguesa, do discurso Pro Caelio de Cícero, respeitando, tanto quanto possível, o estilo do autor. Esta tradução foi ponto de partida para a investigação desenvolvida nos capítulos que a precedem. A complementar o discurso traduzido, o primeiro capítulo (introdução) faz a respetiva contextualização sociopolítica e processual e apresenta o réu, Célio. No segundo capítulo deste trabalho, é explorada a figura de Clódia – personagem central e a mais marcante do discurso – e a importância que lhe é atribuída por Cícero no pleito, em confronto com o papel da mulher nos tempos finais da República. Além disso, apresenta-se um estudo sistemático e tendencialmente exaustivo dos recursos de que o orador estrategicamente lançou mão para, através de uma transferência da culpa, alcançar o duplo objetivo de denegrir Clódia e conseguir a absolvição de Célio. O trabalho é acompanhado de notas históricas e biográficas.

The core of this dissertation is the full translation, for the first time in Portuguese language, of Cicero’s speech Pro Caelio, respecting, as far as possible, the author’s style. This translation was the starting point of the investigation developed in the chapters that precede it. Complementing the translation of the speech, the first chapter (introduction) presents its socio-political and judicial contextualization and introduces the defendant, Caelius. The second chapter of this work explores the figure of Clodia – one of the main characters of the speech and the most remarkable one – and the importance assigned to her in this plea by Cicero, considering the role of women in the end of the Republic. Moreover, a systematic and nearly thorough study is presented of the resources strategically used by the orator in order to, through a blame shifting, achieve the double purpose of denigrating Clodia and obtaining Caelius’ acquittal. The work is enhanced with historical and biographical notes.
