Abstract

A origem dos ciganos está ligada, desde sempre, a fantasiosas extrapolações. Aceites, tolerados ou hostilizados, os ciganos não deixam ninguém indiferente. De maneira geral, pouco se sabe sobre a sua cultura, a sua origem, a sua história e a razão de serem como são, a razão da sua unidade de grupo, a sua língua, a razão da sua presença em Portugal. São questões ainda em aberto. A razão da diáspora dos ciganos ainda hoje não é de todo conhecida, restando, portanto, hipóteses diversas: umas que assentam no conhecimento da história das regiões pelas quais os ciganos foram passando, outras nos estudos linguísticos e outras ainda no conhecimento das características dos ciganos. Nos princípios, devido à dificuldade de estabelecer a origem dos diversos grupos de ciganos que chegaram a Portugal, foram erradamente chamados de gregos ou egípcianos, porque se pensava que vinham da Grécia ou Egipto. Não se conhece com exactidão a data da chegada dos ciganos a Portugal, mas a sua presença começa a ser assinalada no início do século XVI, de acordo com os primeiros testemunhos escritos que aparecem na literatura e na legislação, isto é, no Cancioneiro de 1510 e no “Auto das Ciganas” de Gil Vicente em 1521. A chegada destes grupos nómadas, com uma língua incompreensível, que se diziam cristãos mas que apresentavam práticas misteriosas e profundamente pagãs e estranhas como, por exemplo, adivinhar o futuro, acampar e vestir roupas diferentes, não podiam deixar de causar o pasmo das populações fortemente marcadas pelo espírito medieval da época. Por esta razão, desde logo começaram a tomar forma as leis especificamente relativas a ciganos, levando a quatrocentos e trinta e um anos de perseguição legislativa e, consequentemente, policial, o que é bem demonstrativo da segregação e mesmo do racismo a que estiveram sujeitos e cujos efeitos se fazem sentir ainda hoje.

The origin of gypsies has always been the object of fantastic speculation. Whether they be accepted, tolerated or shunned, gypsy communities leave no one indifferent. Generally speaking, little is known about their culture, their origins, their history, their language, the reasons behind their life philosophy, their sense of group inuty, and their present existence in Portugal. All these questions are still to be answered. The original cause for the gypsy diaspora remains unknown to this date, and several hypotheses have been brought forward, some relying on historical records in places the gypsies have travelled through, others on linguistic studies and others yet on the study of gypsy culture. In the beginning, given difficulties in establishing the origins of the several groups of gypsies that came to Portugal, they were mistakenly called Greeks or Egyptians and were thought to have come from Greece and Egypt. There is not an exact date for their arrival in the territory, but records of their presence here begin at the turn of the 16th century, with the first descriptions in literature and legislation (Cancioneiro, 1510 and Gil Vicente’s Auto das Ciganas, 1521). These were nomadic groups who spoke an incomprehensible language, who claimed to be Christians and yet carried out mysterious and pagan practices such as predicting the future, living out in camps and wearing strange costumes. All this caused a great impression on the medieval populations they encountered. And so began the production of laws specifically aimed at gypsies, which would evolve into 431 years of legislative and police persecution, the effects of which are still very much felt in present-day segregation and racism.
