As imagens do Google Earth no estudo de alinhamentos estruturais do fundo do Atlântico Central

Abstract

Este trabalho apresenta alguns recursos e métodos que podem ser usados na investigação em Geologia, em particular, no domínio tectono-estrutural, e como estes podem servir para ilustrar, com fins essencialmente didácticos, algumas interpretações consideradas um pouco complexas. Focando aspectos da morfologia do fundo do Atlântico Central, a sul e sudoeste da Península Ibérica até aos Açores, procurámos evidenciar aspectos originais da expansão (acreção) oceânica e a sua modificação pela sobreposição de sistemas de fracturas diagonais que modificam as direcções originais e deverão ter favorecido novos processos geológicos, a actividade vulcânica e a sismicidade.

This study shows some resources and methods to be used in geological research, particularly in Structural Geology and Tectonics, and how they can be used to illustrate, with didactic objectives, some interpretations considered more complex. Original aspects of the oceanic accretion and its modification by the interposition of oblique fracture systems were pointed out by the observation of the morphological aspects of the Central Atlantic Ocean crust, from the south and south western border of the Iberian Peninsula to the Azores islands. These fracture systems also modified the original directions and they may have favoured new geologic processes and volcanic and seismic activities.
