Práticas Museológicas no Observatório Astronómico da Universidade de Coimbra (1772-2020): A Gestão da Coleção de Instrumentos Científicos.

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the museological collection management practices applied to the context of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra, from its foundation until the second decade of the 2000s, with a focus on its relocation to the facilities in Santa Clara during the Estado Novo (New State) period.This significant scientific and research institution emerged in the 18th century in the context of a University Reform and, after a turbulent start, eventually established itself in its own building in the courtyard of the Paço das Escolas, which was inaugurated in 1799. Over time, the Observatory acquired various scientific instruments, needing the early implementation of collection management practices, such as inventorying, to identify the different objects under its purview. The replacement of obsolete instruments led to the creation of a museum-like space within the institution, where objects that were no longer in use but held historical and scientific significance were preserved and exhibited.In the context of the construction of the University City of Coimbra, the 18th-century building of the Observatory was demolished, and all of its movable assets were transferred to the current facilities, inaugurated in 1951. This change represented a complex process on various levels, including the management of instruments in use and those integrated into the museum collection.Starting in the 1990s, thanks to the efforts of institution collaborators, a phase of renewal and development of collection management practices began with the goal of reinstalling the Observatory's museum. The created space remains active and functional to this day, representing an important milestone in the preservation and dissemination of the scientific heritage and history of the institution.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo a análise das práticas museológicas de gestão de coleções aplicadas ao contexto do Observatório Astronómico da Universidade de Coimbra, desde a sua fundação até à segunda década dos anos 2000, com enfoque na sua transferência para as instalações em Santa Clara, durante o Estado Novo.Este importante estabelecimento científico de ensino e investigação surge no século XVIII, no contexto da Reforma Pombalina e, após um início conturbado, acaba por se instalar em edifício próprio no pátio do Paço das Escolas, o qual foi inaugurado em 1799. Ao longo do tempo, o Observatório adquiriu diversos instrumentos científicos, tornando-se necessário implementar, desde logo, práticas de gestão de coleções, como a inventariação, para identificar os diferentes objetos sob a sua alçada. A substituição dos instrumentos obsoletos levou à criação de um espaço de caráter museológico na instituição, no qual se preservavam e expunham as peças que já não eram utilizadas, mas que possuíam relevância histórico-científica.No contexto das obras da Cidade Universitária de Coimbra, o edifício setecentista do Observatório foi demolido, transferindo-se todos os seus bens móveis para as atuais instalações, inauguradas em 1951. Essa mudança representou um processo complexo a vários níveis, incluindo para a gestão dos instrumentos em uso e daqueles integrados na coleção museológica.A partir da década de 90, graças aos esforços dos colaboradores da instituição, iniciou-se uma fase de renovação e desenvolvimento das práticas de gestão de coleções, com o objetivo de reinstalar o museu do Observatório. O espaço criado permanece ativo e funcional até aos dias de hoje, representando um marco importante na preservação e divulgação do património científico e da história da instituição.
