Utensílios de tecelagem da Pré e Proto-história na Beira Interior

Abstract

This paper investigates weaving utensils in Beira Interior during the chronological periods of Pre- and Protohistory. The primary aim is to present the dispersion of weaving tools in this geographic region to comprehend the predominant typologies within settlements and their distribution across the studied area. The practice of weaving is substantiated through a diverse array of artifacts, affirming the integral role of this activity in the daily lives of Pre- and Protohistoric communities. These material remains are intertwined with the phenomenon known as the "Secondary Products Revolution," which was observed across the entirety of the Iberian Peninsula starting from the 3rd millennium BCE.Weaving utensils encompass all artifacts related to weaving activities, encompassing both spinning and fabric production. As such, this paper encompasses "cossoiros," which emerged in an earlier chronological period. Moreover, items such as plates, crescents, and notched pebbles—identified as loom components—potentially employed in vertical looms to induce tension in the warp threads, exhibit a broader chronological scope. The objective here is to comprehend their temporal and spatial diffusion.This paper unfolds in four pivotal stages culminating in conclusive insights. The initial phase involves compiling an exhaustive inventory of settlements within Beira Interior housing weaving utensils. Following data compilation and analysis, case studies are selected. The third stage entails individual analysis of each settlement and their associated weaving tools. Notably, not all case study materials undergo direct analysis; some rely on existing bibliographic sources. Conversely, in cases with direct artifact access, individual materials are comprehensively studied, with analysis sheets tailored to the material type. This comprehensive methodology enables thorough investigation. The final stage synthesizes data to discern existing patterns, temporal progression, and spatial distribution in the studied area. This comprehensive analysis yields nuanced insights into weaving practices during Beira Interior's Pre- and Protohistoric periods.With this study, we were able to understand the dispersion of weaving utensils in the settlements of Beira-Interior, as well as examine the different typologies existing in this area and their chronological distribution. Through a brief comparative exercise, it was also possible to discern the typological and technological differences between weaving tools from Beira Interior and those from other regions of Portugal.

O objeto de estudo deste trabalho são os utensílios de tecelagem da Beira Interior nos períodos cronológicos da Pré e Proto-história. O principal objetivo deste estudo é apresentar a dispersão de utensílios de tecelagem nesta área geográfica com o intuito de compreendermos as principais formas presentes nos povoados Pré e Proto-históricos e a sua distribuição pela área em estudo. Este trabalho teve 4 etapas fundamentais que nos permitiram chegar às conclusões finais. A primeira etapa deste trabalho passou pela elaboração de um inventário, o mais completo possível, onde constam os povoados da Beira Interior que evidenciam de utensílios de tecelagem. Após esta recolha de informação e consequentemente a sua análise, passámos à escolha dos casos de estudo. A terceira etapa deste trabalho foi analisar individualmente cada povoado selecionado para casos de estudo, bem como os utensílios de tecelagem que neles foram encontrados. Devemos já referir que nem todos os materiais dos casos selecionados foram alvo de uma análise direta, por vezes o estudo feito aos materiais foi baseado em bibliografia existente. Por fim, a última etapa consistiu em fazer uma abordagem de conjunto aos materiais na tentativa de compreender os padrões existentes nesta área. Com este estudo conseguimos compreender a dispersão dos utensílios de tecelagem nos povoados da Beira-Interior, bem como verificar as diferentes tipologias existentes nesta área e a sua distribuição cronológica. Através de um breve exercício de comparação ainda foi possível apreender as diferenças tipológicas e tecnológicas entre os utensílios de tecelagem da Beira Interior e os de outras áreas do território nacional.
