O Teatro Clássico nos Palcos Contemporâneos Portugueses – ‘Thespis_CECH’, uma base de dados in fieri

Abstract

The present report aims to verify the interest and fascination in classical myths by modern playwrights and directors and to present the reasons for their influence and relevance in Portuguese literature and theatre. To achieve these goals, the practical work held during the curricular internship was limited to Euripides for pragmatic reasons and it consisted of collecting, analysing, and commenting information about that tragedian’s productions performed in Portugal between the 20th and 21st centuries as an activity that will serve as assistance to the still ongoing digital database Thespis_CECH developed by the CECH of the University of Coimbra. The paper includes an introductory chapter where it is presented in a concise manner some literary concepts related to the reception of classic myths. Then there is a brief emphasis on international digital archives that influenced the creation of Coimbra’s database and on the contribution of these methods to the preservation of multiple (re)productions of ancient Greco-Latin theatre. It is presented on the second chapter the host entity of the curricular internship – the Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos (CECH) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra –, the reason why the Centre was chosen as the institution for the internship and its goals so that knowledge is disclosed both nationally and internationally through various projects that complement each other, a digital library and open access seminars and classes. Lastly the report’s third chapter focuses on the work developed during the curricular internship between November 2022 and April 2023: there is an approach of Euripides’ most represented productions in Portugal, an explanation why it led them to be so produced and adapted and the benefits of a cooperative relationship between scholars and theatre companies. The report ends with finishing notes and with comments for future work.

O presente relatório pretende verificar o interesse e fascínio dos dramaturgos e encenadores contemporâneos pelos mitos clássicos e apresentar razões para a relevância e a influência que estes ainda exercem na literatura e no teatro portugueses. No intuito de atingir estes propósitos, o trabalho prático realizado durante o estágio curricular, limitado a Eurípides, por razões pragmáticas, consistiu na recolha, na análise e no comentário de informações sobre as produções daquele tragediógrafo representadas em Portugal, entre os séculos XX e XXI, uma atividade que servirá de auxílio para a base de dados digital Thespis_CECH, ainda em desenvolvimento, criada pelo CECH da Universidade de Coimbra. O trabalho contempla um capítulo introdutório no qual se apresentam, sucintamente, alguns conceitos literários relacionados com a receção dos mitos clássicos. De seguida, dá-se destaque aos arquivos digitais internacionais que influenciaram a criação da base de dados conimbricense e à contribuição destes métodos para a preservação das múltiplas (re)produções do teatro greco-latino da Antiguidade. Apresenta-se, no segundo capítulo, a entidade de acolhimento do estágio curricular – o Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos (CECH) da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra –, a justificação da escolha desta instituição para a realização do estágio e ainda os objetivos do Centro para que o conhecimento seja divulgado e partilhado, nacional e internacionalmente, através de vários projetos que se complementam entre si, de uma biblioteca digital e de seminários e aulas de acesso aberto. Por fim, o terceiro capítulo deste relatório centraliza-se no trabalho desenvolvido durante o estágio curricular, entre novembro de 2022 e abril de 2023: abordam-se as obras euripidianas mais representadas em Portugal e procura-se justificar as razões que as levaram a ser tão produzidas e adaptadas e, ainda, os benefícios de uma relação colaborativa entre académicos e companhias de teatro. O relatório termina com notas conclusivas e com indicações para trabalho futuro.
