Colonizar o rural: criação de uma nova arquitetura campestre. Caso de Estudo: A Colónia Agrícola da Gafanha

Abstract

Durante o século XX, as principais ditaduras europeias investiram em políticas agrárias e rurais que procuraram dar uma face moderna ao seu nativismo político, contribuindo para uma remodelação de paisagens rurais. Em Portugal, por meio da criação da Junta de Colonização Interna, o Estado procurou promover o desenvolvimento rural e a modernização agrícola, visando aumentar a produtividade e melhorar as condições de vida das populações rurais. Desta iniciativa resultou a modesta construção de sete colónias agrícolas que podem ser atualmente reconhecidas na paisagem como laboratórios de políticas de construção e restruturação do território agrário. A presente dissertação investiga a arquitetura política, o desenho e a implementação das colónias agrícolas, focando-se numa análise detalhada da arquitetura e objetivos da Colónia Agrícola da Gafanha como caso de estudo. Para tal, a dissertação discute as políticas de ultraconservadorismo agrário do início do século XX em Portugal, bem como os modelos de colonização agrícola das ditaduras espanhola e italiana enquanto influências centrais para a iniciativa colonizadora portuguesa. A partir daí, procura compreender a transformação do espaço rural português pensado pela Junta de Colonização Interna e o impacto arquitetónico e social dos seus programas. Tomando a Colónia Agrícola da Gafanha como caso de estudo procura-se aprofundar a temática da habitação rural, a transformação do espaço agrário e a criação de uma nova ordem espacial e social, em busca de uma ruralidade moderna, que espelha os paradigmas arquitetónicos do seu período. Esta dissertação usa fontes secundárias, investigação original em arquivo e análise espacial para responder de que forma o modelo de habitação da Colónia Agrícola da Gafanha articula um desejo concreto de transformação sociopolítica e espacial da ruralidade portuguesa, e qual o seu legado hoje.

During the XX century, the main European dictatorships invested in agricultural and rural policies that sought to give a modern face to their political nativism, contributing to a remodeling of rural landscapes. In Portugal, through the establishment of Junta de Colonização Interna, the government sought to promote rural development and agrarian modernization, as a way of increasing productivity and improving the living conditions of rural populations. This initiative resulted in the modest construction of seven agricultural colonies that may currently be recognized in the landscape as laboratories for developing policies and restructuring of the rural territory. The present dissertation investigates the political architecture, design, and implementation of agricultural colonies, focusing on a detailed analysis of the architecture and objectives of the Agricultural Colony of Gafanha as a case study. To this end, the dissertation discusses the agrarian ultra-conservative policies of the early XX century in Portugal, as well as the agricultural colonization models of the Spanish and Italian dictatorships as key influences for the portuguese colonization initiative. From there, it seeks to understand the transformation of the portuguese rural space conceived by Junta de Colonização Interna and the architectural and social impact of its programs. Taking the Agricultural Colony of Gafanha as a case study, we seek to deepen the theme of rural housing, the transformation of the agrarian space and the generation of a new spatial and social order, in search of a modern rurality, which mirrors the architectural paradigms of its time. This dissertation uses secondary sources, original archival research and spatial analysis to answer how the Agricultural Colony of Gafanha housing model articulates a concrete desire for sociopolitical and spatial transformation of the portuguese rurality, and what is its present legacy.
