Title: | ACEITABILIDADE E DETERMINANTES DA ADESÃO AOS PROGRAMAS DE INTERVENÇÃO DE CARIZ PSICOLÓGICO EM DOENTES COM FIBROMIALGIA | Other Titles: | ACCEPTABILITY AND DETERMINANTS OF ADHERENCE TO PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMS IN PATIENTS WITH FIBROMYALGIA | Authors: | Silvestre, Ana Isabel Gomes | Orientador: | Freitas, Paula Cristina Oliveira Castilho | Keywords: | Fibromyalgia; Psychological treatment; Preferences; Help-seeking behavior; Psychological determinants; Fibromialgia; Tratamento de cariz psicológico; Preferências; Comportamento de procura de ajuda; Determinantes psicológicos | Issue Date: | 11-Oct-2023 | Serial title, monograph or event: | ACEITABILIDADE E DETERMINANTES DA ADESÃO AOS PROGRAMAS DE INTERVENÇÃO DE CARIZ PSICOLÓGICO EM DOENTES COM FIBROMIALGIA | Place of publication or event: | Universidade de Coimbra, Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação, Coimbra Portugal | Abstract: | International guidelines recommend non-pharmacological therapies, including psychological interventions, as the first line treatment of fibromyalgia. However, research has reported low adherence to psychological treatment in this population, with few studies focusing on this phenomenon. This study aims to identify clinical and individual factors (illness representations, attitudes towards help-seeking) that influence the (non) seeking of psychological help in fibromyalgia. The sample consists of 97 participants with fibromyalgia (n = 75 women), who completed an online protocol to evaluate the variables under study. The majority of participants received/receive psychological treatment, reporting moderate levels of satisfaction and perceived usefulness. Participants showed a preference for formal help and an individual, face-to-face format. An association was observed between clinical symptoms, emotional representations of fibromyalgia and attitudes and intention to seek help in both sexes. The results in the female population show that psychological openness mediates the relationship between the propensity and intention to seek help, controlling for the effect of clinical symptoms. Additionally, emotional representations of the disease mediate the relationship between the belief of personal control over fibromyalgia and not seeking help, with fibromyalgia symptoms acting as a moderator. This study contributes to the understanding of the determinants of (non) help-seeking and emphasizes the need to target the beliefs and attitudes of people with fibromyalgia and to personalize psychological treatments based on their preferences, in order to promoting help-seeking behaviors and adherence. |
