Abstract

A (e)Vocação Imperial no Cortejo Histórico-Colonial – A performance do Império na 1ª Exposição Colonial Portuguesa de 1934, no Porto O presente estudo versa sobre a análise interpretativa do cortejo alegórico de teor cívico, histórico e colonial que decorreu a 30 de setembro de 1934 e que tomou lugar na cidade do Porto aquando do encerramento festivo da 1ª Exposição Colonial Portuguesa. Pela morfologia particular deste cortejo compreende-se que se trata de um sinal e um sintoma do seu tempo, agregador de múltiplas dimensões que potenciam a sua análise. Quer seja na compreensão da sua ambiência social e cultural, por se realizar no Portugal dos anos 30; quer pelo(s) quadrante(s) político(s) que o enquadra(m), o Estado Novo então emergente, inserido na praticidade do colonialismo (europeu); quer pelas evocação do império colonial português, na sua historicidade, pragmatismo do presente e projeção para o futuro. Tratou-se de uma performance cultural, um acontecimento, caracterizado pela sua efemeridade e pela sua pluridisciplinaridade o que assinala a exigência e o interesse por este caso de estudo. Foi um acontecimento celebrativo da Exposição Colonial Portuguesa que nos leva a conhecer as práticas desenvolvidas nas “Exposições” “internacionais” que o antecederam, além da ideologização subjacente a elas. Foi um mecanismo capaz de propagandear um conjunto de ideias associadas ao Estado Novo e à “regenerativa” construção de uma identidade nacional. Essa identidade versou, sobretudo, na idealização de um projeto imperial e colonial, assente num repertório que defendia o desempenho de uma “missão civilizadora” por parte dos agentes da colonização; enquanto, simultaneamente, procurou reinventar e estimular a cultura vernacular e popular portuguesa, por se crer que esta munia os alicerces de uma identidade nacional, supostamente agregadora dos valores e idiossincrasias do povo português.

The Imperial (e)Vocation in the Historical-Colonial Parade - The performance of the Empire in the 1st Portuguese Colonial Exhibition of 1934, Porto The present study is about the interpretative analysis of the allegorical procession of civic, historical and colonial content that took place on September 30, 1934, in the city of Porto at the festive closing of the 1st Portuguese Colonial Exhibition. The morphology of this procession makes it understandable that it is a sign and a symptom of its time, aggregating multiple dimensions that enhance its analysis. Whether in the understanding of its social and cultural ambience, as it took place in the Portugal of the 1930s; whether by the political quadrant(s) that framed it, the Estado Novo (New State) then emerging, inserted in the practicality of (European) colonialism; or by the evocation of the Portuguese colonial empire, in its historicity, pragmatism of the present and projection into the future. It was a cultural performance, an event, characterized by its ephemerality and by its pluridisciplinarity, which signals the demand and the interest for this case study. It was a celebratory event of the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition that leads us to know the practices developed in the "international" "Expositions" that preceded it, as well as the ideologization underlying them. It was a mechanism capable of propagandizing a set of ideas associated with the New State and the “regenerative” construction of a national identity. This identity was mainly concerned with the idealization of an imperial and colonial project, based on a repertoire that defended the performance of a "civilizing mission" by the agents of colonization; while, simultaneously, it sought to reinvent and stimulate the Portuguese vernacular and popular culture, as it was believed that this provided the foundations of a national identity, supposedly aggregating the values and idiosyncrasies of the Portuguese people.
