Estruturas de Proteção a Áreas Arqueológicas na Ilha do Pessegueiro

Abstract

The Atlantic´s fishing potential is well-known, so it’s not surprising that Alentejo coast has an extensive range of old fish farming facilities. Pessegueiro Island, located on the coast of Porto Covo that is part of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, was the subject of several interventions at different times. In the Roman period it served as a fish salting industry and trading post for maritime trade routes. Later in the 16th century, the Fort of Santo Alberto do Pessegueiro was built and a quarry to the north was explored, since then the islet has been abandoned.The bathing culture and the increase in the flow of tourists in the 1980s, introduced new tourist functions and activities to the coastal town. Consequently, Pessegueiro Island gained the character of a tourist destination, despite not being prepared for it: there is no pier, no identified visiting points, no stopping points and observation of landscape. Thus, the misuse of the islet, together with the constant erosive climatic actions, such as the overtopping of the coast, put the archaeological, architectural and historical elements at risk – the Roman ruins and the fort.This dissertation aims to conceptualize an intervention that provides for the requalification and activation of Pessegueiro Island, in association with the fishing port of Porto Covo. In this plan, the islet is the main focus, the structuring axis of the project and the thesis. The intervention aims at the conservation of the existing elements, mainly the Roman ruins, inserted in a logic of visit and use. The project is understood as a careful activation, it intends to have the greatest respect for the built structure of the islet and reinforce its architecture.In the case of Porto Covo fishing port, in addition to providing assistance for the visit to the Pessegueiro islet, it is planned the requalification and articulation with the proposed coastal route and the creation of a tourist maritime route, which allows connection between all the fishing ports of the Costa Vicentina.

As potencialidades piscícolas do Atlântico são bem renomadas, por isso não é de espantar o facto do litoral alentejano exibir um extenso cordão de antigas instalações piscícolas. de produção de salga peixe. A Ilha do Pessegueiro, localizada na costa de Porto Covo e no Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, foi alvo de várias intervenções em diferentes épocas. No período romano serviu como indústria de salga de peixe e entreposto comercial das rotas comerciais marítimas. Mais tarde, no século XVI, foi construído o Forte de Santo Alberto do Pessegueiro e explorada a pedreira a norte. Desde aí a ilhota tem ficado ao abandono.A cultura de banhos e o aumento do fluxo de turistas nos anos 80, introduziu novas funções e atividades turísticas na povoação costeira. Consequentemente, a Ilha do Pessegueiro ganhou um caracter de destino turístico, apesar de não estar preparada para tal: não há cais de atracagem, não há percursos de visita identificados, não há pontos de paragem e observação da paisagem. Assim, os maus usos da ilhota, juntamente com as constantes ações erosivas climáticas, como o galgamento da costa pelas ondas, colocam em risco os elementos arqueológicos, arquitetónicos e históricos – as ruínas romanas e o forte.Esta dissertação tem como objetivo conceptualizar uma intervenção que preveja a requalificação e ativação da Ilha do Pessegueiro, em associação com o porto de pesca de Porto Covo. Neste plano, a ilhota é o principal foco, o eixo estruturante do projeto e da tese. A intervenção visa a conservação dos elementos presentes, principalmente as ruínas romanas, inseridos numa lógica de visita e uso. O projeto compreende-se como uma ativação cuidada, pretende ter o maior respeito pela estrutura construída da ilhota e reforçar a sua arquitetura.No caso do porto de pesca de Porto Covo, para além de providenciar ajuda à visita à ilhota do Pessegueiro, prevê-se a requalificação e articulação com o percurso costeiro proposto e a criação de um percurso marítimo turístico, que permita a ligação entre todos os portos de pesca da costa vicentina.
