I giganti della montagna de Luigi Pirandello: Análise e tradução da peça e a experiência da mise-en-scène

Abstract

O estágio curricular previsto no segundo ano do Mestrado em Tradução foi realizado em colaboração com a companhia teatral Trincheira Teatro de Coimbra, para a qual foi traduzida a peça teatral I giganti della montagna de Luigi Pirandello. A colaboração teve uma duração de sete meses e concluiu-se com a representação da peça perante o público conimbricense nas datas de 4 e 5 de setembro de 2021. O presente Relatório de Estágio visa descrever os detalhes da experiência de tradução, colaboração e encenação da peça, ilustrando, na sua Parte I, exemplos de dificuldades de tradução e de escolhas que foram adotadas. De seguida, a Parte II estabelecerá uma ligação entre o trabalho de tradução da peça e a área dos estudos de tradução teatral, com uma descrição das suas características principais e dos seus desafios, como a multidimensionalidade do texto teatral, a dicotomia entre público de leitores e público de espectadores, os fatores extralinguísticos que incidem no trabalho do tradutor, entre outros. A Parte III do Relatório é dedicada ao autor da peça, Luigi Pirandello, e repercorre a sua biografia, as linhas principais da sua poética, as suas obras literárias e dramatúrgicas, bem como a receção e o impacto que o autor teve em Portugal. O Relatório focar-se-á, por fim, na derradeira peça teatral de Pirandello, considerada pelo mesmo como a sua obra-prima, I giganti della montagna: a última parte do presente trabalho traçará, assim, a sua sinopse e interpretação, para concluir com a descrição das representações da peça em Portugal.

In the curricular internship of the second year of the Master’s in Translation it became possible to establish a collaboration with the Coimbra-based theatre company Trincheira Teatro, for which the play I giganti della montagna by Luigi Pirandello was translated. The collaboration lasted seven months and ended with the staging of the play for the audience of Coimbra on 4th and 5th September 2021. This report aims to describe the details of the translation, collaboration, and staging of the play, showing, in its Part I, examples of translation difficulties and the choices that were made. Some of the translation problems that will be analyzed are the translation of poetry, translation of proper names, and geographic, cultural, and time references. The Part II of the report establishes a connection between the translation of the play and the area of theatre translation, describing its main characteristics and challenges, such as the multi-dimension of the play, the duality between the audience of readers and spectators, extralinguistic factors that affect the translator’s work, amongst others. The Part III will focus on the play’s author, Luigi Pirandello, and will outline his biography, the key aspects of his poetics, his literary and theatre work, as well as the reception and the impact the author had in Portugal. Finally, the report will describe Pirandello’s last play, I giganti della montagna, considered by the author as his masterpiece. The final part of this report will portray the play’s plot and interpretation, concluding with a description of its representations in Portugal.
