As Expedições Naturalistas e Cartográficas e as Práticas Científicas no Brasil do Século XVIII

Abstract

Com a chegada dos europeus ao Novo Mundo, os relatos dos primeiros exploradores e aventureiros, entre os séculos XVI e XVII, colaboraram de forma efetiva para o reconhecimento e dominação das colônias ali instaladas. Apenas no século XVIII, as viagens exploratórias ao Brasil, inspiradas pelo iluminismo europeu, receberam viés científico mais acentuado e sistemático, com o objetivo de identificar novas potencialidades econômicas para Portugal. A história cartográfica e a riqueza natural da América Portuguesa estava para ser revelada cientificamente, atendendo aos interesses imperiais, contando com o conhecimento dos jovens luso-brasileiros letrados na Europa que trabalharam como homens do Estado em sua terra natal. No presente trabalho, percorremos algumas das principais expedições realizadas no Brasil durante o século XVIII, com a perspectiva de identificar as práticas científicas que as permeavam, seus objetivos e resultados. Algumas cartas e documentos, localizados em arquivos portugueses, contribuíram para trazer novos elementos a este estudo.

With the Europeans arrival at the 'New World', the first explorers and adventures accounts, between XVI and XVII centuries, collaborated effectively for the installed colonies domination and recognition. Exploratory voyages to Brazil, inspired by the European enlightenment, received more scientific and systematic bias, in the eighteenth century. The main goal was to identify the new economic Portuguese potentialities. Attending to the imperial interests, the American Portugal cartographic history and natural wealth was about to be scientifically revealed. It was taking into account the young 'luso-brazilians' graduated in Europe who worked as men of the State in their native land. In the present work, main expeditions carried out in Brazil during the eighteenth century are covered with the perspective of identifying the scientific practices that permeated those expeditions, their goals and results. Some letters and documents, located in Portuguese archives contributed to bring new elements to this study.
