This dissertation aims to bring closer together new theories, born from the science of International Relations, and the analysis of specific historical political contexts. In that sense, the present work will approach the modern concept of paradiplomacy (an analysis model for the study of the relations between sub-national entities), as introduced by Panayotis Soldatos, Ivo Duchacek and André Lecours, among others, and test its application in historical context. As such, the said Nanban period (1543-1639/40) was selected. This period represents the years of contact between Japan, at the time fragmented in strong regional units, with a new force in the region, the Crown of Portugal, loosely represented by traders from its Southeast Asian territories, and by missionaries from the Society of Jesus. This work will seek to demonstrate the way in which the Japanese regional lords, the Portuguese traders and the Jesuit missionaries interacted in a web of political, economic, military and religious interests, in the context of what will be tentatively identified as a set of paradiplomatic relations. |
