As Relações Luso-Nipónicas durante a Época Nanban Um caso de Paradiplomacia Quinhentista e Seiscentista

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objectivo fazer uma aproximação de novas teorias, nascidas no seio das Relações Internacionais, a análises históricas de contextos políticos específicos. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho visa abordar os conceitos modernos de paradiplomacia (um modelo de análise de relação entre entidades sub-nacionais), como introduzidos por Panayotis Soldatos, Ivo Duchacek e André Lecours, entre outros, e testar a sua aplicação em contexto histórico. Para tal, escolheu-se como campo de estudo o período dito Nanban (1543-1639/40). Este período representou os anos de contacto entre um Japão fragmentado em fortes poderes regionais com uma nova força na região, a Coroa Portuguesa, representada de forma pouco controlada por mercadores portugueses originários dos territórios portugueses no Sudeste Asiático e por missionários da Companhia de Jesus. O trabalho procurará demonstrar como os senhores regionais japoneses, os comerciantes portugueses e os missionários jesuítas interagem numa teia de interesses políticos, económicos, militares e religiosos, naquilo que se procurará identificar como um conjunto de relações paradiplomáticas.

This dissertation aims to bring closer together new theories, born from the science of International Relations, and the analysis of specific historical political contexts. In that sense, the present work will approach the modern concept of paradiplomacy (an analysis model for the study of the relations between sub-national entities), as introduced by Panayotis Soldatos, Ivo Duchacek and André Lecours, among others, and test its application in historical context. As such, the said Nanban period (1543-1639/40) was selected. This period represents the years of contact between Japan, at the time fragmented in strong regional units, with a new force in the region, the Crown of Portugal, loosely represented by traders from its Southeast Asian territories, and by missionaries from the Society of Jesus. This work will seek to demonstrate the way in which the Japanese regional lords, the Portuguese traders and the Jesuit missionaries interacted in a web of political, economic, military and religious interests, in the context of what will be tentatively identified as a set of paradiplomatic relations.
