Biography
Hermínio C. de Sousa (HC de Sousa) graduated in Chemical Engineering (5-years Lic. Chem Eng, 1992) from the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. He completed his PhD in 1997, in Chemistry - Physical Chemistry, also at the New University of Lisbon. At the same year he got a Teaching Assistant position at the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Coimbra, Portugal (DEQ-FCTUC), where he currently holds a Tenured Associate Professor position since 2019. He is a Senior Member of the Portuguese Association of Engineers (Portugal) and of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), USA. HC de Sousa has more than 20 years of academic experience in teaching theoretical, theoretical-practical, laboratorial and tutorial/supervision classes at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels. He was also a Visiting Professor/Researcher at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, USA (2007, 2014), Federal University of Pará, Brazil (2009), UNICAMP, Brazil (2011, 2012), Federal University of Bahia, Brazil (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), and National University of Colombia, Colombia (2013, 2014, 2017). HC de Sousa is the team leader of the Green and Sustainable Processes Laboratory (GSP), at the Chemical Process Engineering and Forest Products Research Centre of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Coimbra (CIEPQPF/DEQ-FCTUC). GSP research strategies and activities are mainly focused on the use of “greener”, sustainable, safer, biomimetic and environmentally-friendly innovative processes for the development of value-added products and materials/nanomaterials which are predominantly envisaged for pharmaceutical/drug delivery and biomedical/tissue engineering applications. However, food, agricultural, nutraceutical, cosmetic, antimicrobial, water treatment, oil & gas, electronics, and low VOC-emission materials/applications are/were also covered. Employed “greener” and sustainable approaches comprise the use of supercritical fluids (e.g., high-pressure, subcritical and supercritical carbon dioxide); of aqueous/ethanolic-based solvent systems; of natural-origin biopolymers and phytochemicals obtained from renewable resources (e.g., from vegetable raw materials and agro-industrial residues/wastes); of ionic liquids (namely of safer/biodegradable ionic liquids), and of “greener”, biomimetic and self-assembly-based synthesis/processing strategies. Several advantageous combinations of these five approaches were/are also implemented. Specific examples of application of the GSP research activities include the development of: nano/microparticles for drug delivery; implants, hydrogels and contact/intraocular lenses for ophthalmic drug delivery; medicated natural-origin wound dressings (namely for diabetic foot ulceration treatment); pre-formed and in-situ forming polymeric implants for prolonged drug/protein release; natural-origin adhesives and bioadhesives; bioactive natural products and their pharmaceutical/biomedical, food, nutraceutical, agricultural and cosmetic formulations/delivery systems; natural-origin flocculants for water treatment; plasticized low-VOC emission PVC/PU materials; and macro-, meso- and microporous silica-based biomaterials (e.g., biomimetic/bioactive biopolymer/silica composite/hybrid biomaterials - drug delivery/hard-tissue applications). More recent research topics include the development of: 1) multifunctional stimuli-responsive and electroactive biomaterials; 2) novel and more efficient materials and nanomaterials for oxygen/CO2/gas capture, storage, delivery and separation; 3) enhanced oil recovery and CO2/water-induced asphaltene precipitation in crude oil reservoirs; 4) improved and eco-friendly agricultural pesticide delivery, biomanagement and pest control (namely for insects/nematodes control); 5) supercritical CO2 as a sterilizing and biocidal agent.
