Biography
Verónica Ferreira is a stream ecologist who has been addressing the effects of natural and human-driven environmental change on stream biota and processes for nearly 20y. V Ferreira graduated in Biology in 2002 and completed her Ph.D. degree in Biology (specific field: Ecology) in 2007, both at the University of Coimbra. After completing her Ph.D., V Ferreira undertook two consecutive postdocs (FCT calls). During the first postdoc (2007-2012), she carried out research at the IMAR (University of Coimbra, Portugal), at the EcoLab (CNRS, Toulouse, France), and at the Benthos Ecology Laboratory (Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil), to evaluate the effects of global change factors on stream communities and ecosystem functioning. During the second postdoc (2012-2015), she carried out research at the IMAR (University of Coimbra, Portugal) and at the School of Biological Sciences (Royal Holloway University of London, England), with visits to other labs, to assess the effects of anthropogenic activities on stream processes by means of meta-analysis. Then, V Ferreira got two consecutive contracts (FCT calls IF2014, CEEC2018) as an auxiliary researcher at the University of Coimbra (MARE), where she keeps using field correlative studies (at regional, continental and global scales), field manipulative studies (including manipulations at the whole-stream scale), laboratory studies (microcosms), as well as meta-analysis to address the effects of environmental change on stream structure and functioning. Effects of forest change (e.g. eucalyptus plantations, invasion by exotic tree species, infection by invasive pathogens) on stream communities and functioning are recurrent topics of interest. V Ferreira has participated in 16 research projects (4 as PI; 5 within global networks). She has published >70 papers in peer-reviewed journals (+12 book chapters), more than half with international collaborations, with >4800 citations and an h-index of 35 (Google Scholar). She has also co-edited one book, given 16 invited talks (3 as a plenary speaker at international congresses), and (co-)authored 70 oral talks and 29 posters. V Ferreira has also (co-)supervised master and Ph.D. students (3 ongoing) and fellows, lectured in advanced post-graduation courses, and (co-)organized conferences (including the Limnologia2018 congress of the Iberian Association of Limnology) and courses on stream ecology and meta-analysis. She has also reviewed projects for international funding agencies and academic programs, papers for 52 international scientific journals, been a Guest Editor for Limnetica (special issue 39(1) 2020; Iberian Association of Limnology). She also serves as an Associate Editor for the international journals Hydrobiologia (since 2014; Springer) and Functional Ecology (since 2020; British Ecological Society), and is the Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on Aquatic Ecosystem Services for the journal Hydrobiologia. V Ferreira is also the vice-president of the AIL-Iberian Association of Limnology and of PROAQUA-Association for the Promotion of Knowledge in Aquatic Sciences. Additionally. V Ferreira devotes substantial time to organizing science communication activities such as seminar cycles to the lay public, exhibitions and activities with families, generally involving local institutions (e.g. Science Museum, Water Museum, Coimbra Municipal swiming pools, Lousã Municipality), and in participating in science communication programs (e.g. Life Science in Summer from the National Agency for Scientific Culture, European Researcher's Night). Several of her studies were the target of press releases published in regional and national media (traditional and online), and she has been giving interviews for newspapers, radio and TV.
