dc.description.abstract | The Leishmaniasis are zoonoses transmitted vectorially by Phlebotomus, infected by the protozoan of the genus Leishmania. It occurs in different clinical entities, for man, being cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral, and other animals being the dog the main host. It is estimated that in the world 12 million people are infected and about 350 million are at risk of contracting the disease. For this work, the main objective was the ecological and taxonomic characterization of the phlebotomine fauna existing in the parish of Cernache, located in the District of Coimbra, contributing to the knowledge about Leishmaniasis in Portugal. Between June 16 to November 13, 2017, and June 23 to July 27, 2018, 55 collection points were prospected, in different types of biotopes (domestic, peridomestic and sylvatic). The sampled phlebotomus were identified taxonomically by their morphology and 16 females were chosen to detect Leishmania DNA using molecular analysis. For data analysis, the population distribution of each species was calculated by the relative frequencies, mean, standard deviation, median, minimum, and maximum, Spearman's correlation was used to explore each descriptor individually with the population distribution of each species, and predictive models were built based on Linear Regression Analysis using the backward method. From the total of 666 phlebotomus sampled, the relative abundances were: Phlebotomus perniciosus with 80.78%, P. ariasi with 16.67%, P. sergenti with 2.40% and Sergentomyia minuta with 0.15%. Phlebotomus papatasi was not detected in this study. In the molecular analysis, it was not detected the presence of Leishmania in the chosen females. There is the need to continue the studies, monitoring of phlebotomus, doing research with the hosts affected by the disease, as well as the reporting of data related to Leishmaniasis, not only in the Parish of Cernache but also for the District of Coimbra in general. | eng |
