Over the years, environmental pollution through heavy metals has been growing, causing numerous problems in ecosystems. The waters are the most affected systems, bringing a major problem to all living beings, affecting the entire food chain. In this way, we need to reverse this situation by removing these pollutants. Among many techniques studied, the adsorptive processes that, through materials with high adsorption capacity (adsorbents), allow the removal of metals stand out. Among many potential adsorbents, this work is based on the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that have been the subject of an intensive study in recent times. In this project, β-ketoenamine type COFs have been synthesized, by reacting 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) with different diamines that differed only in the functional group, in order to evaluate the influence of the adsorbent’s physical and chemical properties in its adsorption capacity towards pollutants. The diamines used are derived from benzidine containing nitro and sulphonic acid groups as substituents. The COFs were synthesized by the conventional solvothermal method, with yields up to 96%. In addition, we also studied the influence that the matrix of the metal solutions had on the removal capacity of the COFs. For isothermal studies and the removal efficiency of these COFs, flame atomic adsorption spectroscopy was used to quantify heavy metals in solution. It was possible to conclude that the COF containing sulphonic groups presents better results in all studies conducted, being able to adsorption about 97% in some cases. In summary, the results were promising which allows confirming the potential of this new class of materials in the capture and removal of pollutants. |
