Cuidados Paliativos: O que sabem os portugueses?

Abstract

Background: Palliative Care (PC) is the current response to physical, psychological and social problems associated with chronic, degenerative and disabling diseases. In this context, a new psychoterapeutic approach, Dignity Therapy (DT), has emerged, focusing on the negative emotional dimension that accompanies those clinical conditions. The aim of this study was to map the knowledge held by a sample of the Portuguese population, on the referred therapeutic approaches, and to identify the information needs felt by the individuals. Methodology: An observational and cross-sectional study was carried out, using an anonymous survey with questions about the characteristics and specificities of PC and DT, targeting Portuguese individuals over 18 years-old. The sample was characterized in terms of gender, age, education level and profession. The responses were analyzed using methods of descriptive, inferential and non-parametric statistics. Results: 629 responses were obtained. 94,9% of the individuals reported knowing what PC was, but only 20,2% said they knew DT, though 94,9% considered that this therapy could be beneficial for end-of-life patients. 85,8% showed interest in expanding their knowledge in at least one of the themes. 46% of the comments made recognized the importance of this project and themes it addressed and 23% emphasized the importance of widespread diffusion of the information. Discussion and Conclusion: Despite some knowledge about PC and DT demonstrated, flaws in the perception of some of its specificities were identified. It is evident the need and interest of the population that the information about characteristics of this care is widely disseminated, making it accessible to all.

Introdução: Os Cuidados Paliativos (CP) são a resposta atual aos problemas físicos, psicológicos e sociais gerados por doenças crónicas, degenerativas e incapacitantes. Neste contexto, tem vindo a despontar uma nova abordagem terapêutica, a Terapia da Dignidade (TD), com foco na dimensão emocional de carácter negativo que acompanha estes quadros clínicos. Este estudo teve por objetivo mapear o conhecimento detido por uma amostra da população portuguesa, sobre as referidas abordagens terapêuticas, identificando as necessidades informativas da mesma.Materiais e Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo observacional e transversal, com recurso a um inquérito anónimo com questões acerca das características e especificidades dos CP e TD, sendo a população-alvo, indivíduos portugueses maiores de 18 anos. A amostra foi caracterizada em termos de sexo, idade, habilitações literárias e profissão. Analisaram-se as respostas obtidas utilizando métodos de estatística descritiva, inferencial e não-paramétrica. Resultados: Obtiveram-se 629 respostas ao questionário. 94,9% dos indivíduos referiram saber o que eram CP mas apenas 20,2% afirmou conhecer a TD, sendo que 94,9% considerou que esta terapia poderia ser benéfica em doentes em fim de vida. 85,8% revelou interesse em aprofundar o conhecimento em pelo menos uma das temáticas. Dos comentários realizados, 46% reconheceram a importância do projeto e das temáticas abordadas e 23% enfatizou a importância da difusão alargada da informação.Discussão e Conclusão: Apesar de algum conhecimento sobre CP e TD demonstrado, foram identificadas falhas na perceção de algumas das suas especificidades. É evidente a necessidade e o interesse, por parte da população, em que a informação acerca das características destes cuidados seja difundida em larga escala, tornando-se acessível a todos.
