Pelo Interior Norte da Lusitânia. A encosta Noroeste da Serra da Estrela.

Abstract

Apesar de conhecida desde o final do séc. XIX, a presença romana na vertente noroeste da Serra da Estrela apresenta ainda desafios consideráveis para o seu entendimento, especialmente na região que delimitamos e que corresponde, grosso-modo, ao concelho de Gouveia. Às condicionantes geográficas e ambientais, naturalmente associadas aos contextos complexos montanhosos, associaram-se as dificuldades no conhecimento das comunidades que habitavam este território, apesar de os relacionarmos, genericamente, com os Lusitanos; e em classificar tipos de ocupação nas estações arqueológicas romanas, muitas vezes descritas simplesmente como vestígios diversos ou achados isolados, que necessitámos de rever. Esta necessidade encontrou nos estudos sobre a paisagem rural romana, uma abordagem que permitiu sistematizar e tipificar os sítios arqueológicos encontrados, permitindo, não só a criação de uma base de dados, mas também realizar representações gráficas, possibilitando a leitura deste conjunto de sítios arqueológicos, que até aqui, não havia sido aplicado, buscando um contributo para o entendimento da presença romana nesta área da Serra da Estrela, em particular, assimilando novas perspetivas sobre a administração romana e a integração deste território nas dinâmicas do Império, sabendo que as comunidades habitantes deste território, que apesar de pouco sabermos deles, estão representados nas materialidades do mundo pré-romano identificadas, desempenharam um papel na construção desta paisagem rural.

Although known since the end of the 19th century, the Roman presence on the northwestern slope of Serra da Estrela still presents considerable challenges for its understanding, especially in the region we delimited and which corresponds, roughly, to the municipality of Gouveia. The geographical and environmental constraints, naturally associated with complex mountainous contexts, are associated with difficulties in understanding the communities that inhabited this territory, although we generally relate them to the Lusitanians; and in classifying types of occupation in Roman archaeological sites, often described as diverse remains or isolated finds, which we needed to review. This need was fulfilled by looking at studies about the Roman rural landscape, allowing us an approach for the systematization and typification of the archaeological sites found, allowing not only the creation of a database, but also graphical representations, enabling the reading of this set of archaeological sites, that until now, had not been applied, seeking a contribution to the understanding of the Roman presence in this area of Serra da Estrela, in particular, assimilating new perspectives on the Roman administration and the integration of this territory in the dynamics of the Empire, knowing that the inhabiting communities of this territory played a role in the construction of this rural landscape, which despite our little knowledge of them, are represented in the pre-Roman materialities found until now.
