A cerâmica da fossa 3 do Conservatório de Música do Baixo Alentejo, Beja entre os séculos XII e XIII

Abstract

This work focuses on the study of ceramic material from the cesspool number 3 of the Conservatório de Música do Baixo Alentejo in Beja, whose assets were recovered during the 2010 archaeological campaigns within the framework of the project “Arqueologia das Cidades de Beja”. In this site, during excavations carried out in 1999, an occupation of long diachrony that goes from the II Iron Age to the present day was attested.The city of Beja had great importance in Antiquity and in the Islamic period, due to its strategic position and being well served by paths that connected it to the Atlantic, by land, and to the Mediterranean gates through the Guadiana, this particularity allowed the transit in its territory of people, ideas and goods.The ceramic material in cesspool 3 was all cataloged and studied, even the smallest of the fragments, as these gave us the opportunity to carry out a statistical analysis and understand what type of material circulated at the time of filling the pit. This investigation allowed us, through the search for parallels and based on the characteristics of the ceramic ensemble, to date them between the 12th and 13th centuries.Through the analysis of the materials with regard to their functional, morphological, technical, decorative, as well as chronological characteristics, we were able to contribute to a better understanding of the archaeological site and the way of cooking and serving at the table during the transition from the Islamic period to the Christian, whose new ways are reflected in the objects of everyday life.

Este trabalho incide sobre o estudo do material cerâmico da fossa número 3 do logradouro do Conservatório de Música do Baixo Alentejo em Beja, cujo espólio foi recuperado durante as campanhas arqueológicas de 2010 dentro do quadro do projeto “Arqueologia das cidades de Beja”. Neste sítio, durante as escavações realizadas em1999, foi atestada uma ocupação de longa diacronia que vai desde a II Idade do Ferro até os dias atuais. A cidade de Beja teve grande importância na Antiguidade e no período islâmico, isto, devido à sua posição estratégica e por ser bem servida de caminhos que a ligavam ao Atlântico, por via terrestre, e às portas do Mediterrâneo através do Guadiana, essa particularidade permitiu o trânsito em seu território de pessoas, ideias e mercadorias. O material cerâmico da fossa 3 foi todo catalogado e estudado, até mesmo o menor dos fragmentos, pois estes nos deram possibilidades de fazer uma análise estatística e compreendermos que tipo de material circulava no momento da colmatação da fossa. Esta investigação permitiu-nos, através da procura de paralelos e baseando-nos nas características do conjunto cerâmico, datá-los entre os séculos XII e XIII.Pudemos, através da análise dos materiais no que concerne suas características funcionais, morfológicas, técnicas, decorativas, assim como cronológicas, contribuir para melhor compreensão do sítio arqueológico e do modo de cozinhar e servir à mesa durante o momento de transição do período islâmico para o cristão, cujas novas maneiras refletem nos objetos da vida cotidiana.
