This study aims to consolidate the knowledge about the importance of socioeconomic conditions in the quality of life of people over 75 years old. The decrease of the young population and the increase of the old-aged population has become a predominant feature in the demographic evolution in Portugal. Concretely, the number of people with more than 75 years old has increased significantly (Strategy and Planning Office, 2017) and at the same time is age range/group with lower quality of life (Eurostat, 2013). The general objective of this research work was to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic conditions and self-perception of the quality of life of older people with more than 75 years. We used the Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36) to evaluate the quality of life in an intentional non-probabilistic sample of 68 individuals and conducted a semi-structured interview to collect information on socioeconomic conditions. We conclude that the educational level, professional qualifications and socioeconomic conditions of our sample are low and equally, in generally the quality of life is low, below the 50% threshold. The physical function dimension shows the lowest score compared to the psychological and social dimensions. On the other hand, the vast majority of participants deal with financial restrictions, with 50% of the sample stating that the money earned is not sufficient for all expenses until the end of the month. So, most older people in this age group do not live on an adequate income for their expenses, which implies more difficulties in accessing health care and services and consecutively lower quality of life. This conclusion reinforces the need for intervention by the social worker, who must strive for better living conditions of the elderly population, promoting the creation or adjustment of public policy measures that address the prevention and promotion of the health status of older people.eng
