Purpose: This research work has as main objective to analyze the impact of the human characteristics of the brands (Anthropomorphism, Gender of the brand, Current Me, Ideal Me, Cultural Symbolism and Social Commitment) in the perception of the brand’s authenticity. Additionally, this research also sought to identify the impact of Brand Authenticity on Hedonic and Eudaimonic happiness. In a final phase, the intention was to analyze the nationality’s moderating effect by making a comparative study between Brazil and Portugal.Metodology/Approach: In order to achieve the proposed objectives, a concetual model was developed with nine research hypotheses. This investigation adopted a quantitative approach, with data collection through an online questionnaire and subsequent statistical analysis using the Structural Equations Model. This study had the participation of 558 respondents, 309 from Portugal and 249 from Brazil.Findings: This investigation’s results offer contributions to better understand the dynamics of the relationship between consumers and brands. Through this study, it was possible to verify that anthropomorphism, the gender of the brand, the Current Self, Cultural Symbolism and Social Commitment positively affect the brand’s authenticity and that the Ideal Self has a negative effect on the authenticity of the brand. On the other hand, it was found that Brand Authenticity positively impacts both Hedonic and Eudaimonic happiness.Research limitations/Implications: The sample used in the analysis proved to be insufficient for a comparative study, which prevented a reliable understanding of cultural effects. The application of the model developed in an expanded sample may yield contributions to this specific perspective and advance research in this area.Practical implications: Bearing in mind that this work aims to better understand the dynamics between consumer and brand, its results can help in the development of new marketing strategies by companies.Originality/Value: This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the antecedents and consequences of the Brand’s Authenticity. While the literature in this field is composed mainly of studies restricted to specific brands or types of products, this analysis offers an innovative perspective, with a broader cross-sectional model. Additionally, the investigation was conducted in two countries’ markets, aiming at a comparative study perspective, a modality also scarce in this field.
