Alterações climáticas e as instituições de ensino superior: o caso da Universidade de Coimbra

Abstract

As questões ambientais têm vindo a agravar-se nos últimos anos e têm sido tema de discussão, quer pela parte da comunidade científica quer pela sociedade civil. Atualmente, já ouvimos dizer “o clima está a mudar” ou “o clima está diferente”. O Relatório do IPCC sobre o “Aquecimento Global de 1,5ºC”, de 2019, afirma que as atividades humanas influenciam em cerca de 1ºC do aquecimento global acima dos níveis pré-industriais, podendo ter oscilações entre 0,8ºC e 1,2ºC. É mencionado no relatório que o aquecimento global poderá ter um aumento de 1,5ºC entre 2030 e 2052, face às temperaturas da era pré-industrial, caso continue a agravar-se o problema.A dissertação desenvolve-se em torno do tema das Alterações Climáticas, tendo como principal objetivo estudar as Alterações Climáticas e as Instituições de Ensino Superior, com recurso ao método de inquérito por questionário e ao focus group para poder identificar o conhecimento dos estudantes sobre o tema e perceber as respetivas opiniões e que sugestões têm para a Universidade implementar no âmbito das políticas ambientais.O Plano Estratégico da Universidade de Coimbra preconiza algumas linhas estratégicas para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Identificam-se algumas medidas como a instalação de painéis solares, utilização de lâmpadas LED e a remoção de carne de vaca nas refeições confecionadas pela Universidade.As universidades têm um papel ativo nas sociedades, pois são uma das fontes de conhecimento e de investigação. O papel de uma universidade pode ser a transferência de conhecimentos para os outros cientistas e investigadores, para os seus alunos e para a sociedade civil, criando uma possibilidade de alterar formas de pensar e de criar formas culturais. Por exemplo, a Universidade de Harvard nos Estados Unidos da América trabalha desde 2006 em parceria com os seus alunos para reduzir as emissões de CO2 para o ambiente. Environmental questions have been aggravating in the last years and have been a matter of discussion for the scientists community and the society in general. Nowadays, we have heard that "the climate is changing" or that "the climate is different". The IPCC report "Global Warming of 1,5ºC" of 2019 states that human activities have had an average influence of 1ºC on global warming above pre-industrial levels, with oscillations between 0,8ºC and 1,2ºC. In the report it is mentioned that global warming might have an increase of 1,5ºC between 2030 and 2052, relating to temperatures in the pre-industrial era, in case the problem keeps aggravating. This dissertation focuses on Climate Change, with the main objective of studying climate change and Higher Education Institutions, using the survey method and focus groups in order to identify the knowledge of students about the matter and to understand their opinions and suggestions on which environmental policies the University can implement. The strategic plan of the University of Coimbra advocates some lines for sustainable development. Some measures identified were: the installation of solar panels, the use of LED lamps the withdrawal of beef from its canteen meals.Universities have an active role in society, as one source of knowledge and scientific research. The role of a university might be the share of knowledge to other scientists and researchers, to their students and society, making the way for changes in the modes of thinking and producing new cultural forms.
